| My newest toy! Bought it from the owner in Germany in January, who owned it since 1971. The base was good and almost all correct parts where there. Try to finish it for this summer! That's not me on the picture but the previous owner! |

It would be good to have the wooden roof rail at the back of the car easily removable, to do the body work, but I don't know if its possible. :? |
The wooden bow above the rear window? if so then you won't be able to replace this with the headliner in place, the screws are underneath. The wooden bow around the back would be replaceable though. |

|---|
| Thats what I was afraid of. That thing is well and truly nailed in to place. |
| Posted by: '50 Karmann - 12 April 2008 17:03:52 |
|---|
| If you are talking about the large Horse shoe shaped bow above the engine lid. That piece of wood is not easily removed(i can only speak from the expierience of an early car, mind you,1950). On the early cars this bow is fastened by nails thru' the bodywork, the heads are then lead loaded. There are also steel tabs welded to the inner body work, which screws pass thru' and into the bow. The bow in my car was bedded on a piece of seat material to asure it lay level. If you are replacing the outer hood and padding,i'm sure the other bows can be removed without too much damage being done to the headcloth. The most rust i found on my car was under the large horseshoe shaped bow,it would appear a prone area for trapping water. I would certainly say this is an area that if you do not treat you will have big problems. If the later cars are built in the same way, the photograph shows the sort of damage you will need to make to your car to remove the lower bow  |
| Posted by: JD - 13 April 2008 12:13:04 |
|---|
| Thanks George. AFAIK, the bow is fitted in a pretty similar fashion, although I don't think the nail heads are lead loaded on the outside, which should make life easier. Like I said - I could use a new hood outer, which will probably mean a new wood bow around the back, and when thats out, I don't know what I might unearth, in the way of rust. I didn't want to end up getting sucked into a ton of bodywork, just to put a new hood on! |

| Drivers side door is repaired. Once the outsidepannel was replaced becouse of a huge accident in the drivers side door, that was the reason that I was looking for a very solid one but that's not so easy if you need one quick so I planned to repair that door. | My gearstick, handbrake, feul reserve handle and seats are in beige colour. So only the steering colum and semaphore switch are in body colour. I think that's only a vert thing. Also in the front trunk everything was painted in body colour. Even the bumperguards and bolts where in bodycolour, was still in first paint inside. Those verts are strange cars! Doe anybody knows if there is someone who is making the card board for the front trunk? Also this should be painted in body colour. |

| Some new pics from my yesterday work. One NOS and one very nice used rear bumper. The original bumperss where still there but in very bad condition. The zwitter bumpers are exact the same as the later bumpers -1967 I've sanded the inside, taped them and sprayed some aluminium spray on it. | Those rain channels at the foot of the rear window always get in a bad way Pascal, the small tubes get blocked aswell, mine were equally as bad as yours. I did a 100% strip of my frames, glass out, new rubbers. The frames particulary on the front windows spring apart, maybe worse on a split as no quarter lights(vent windows)it's a big headache getting them back together. I had to use two big wood working clamps and wind them in.All the time the new rubber is moving. Not a job i ever look forward to doing again. But i really felt like i had achieved something when they were back complete again. |

The rainchannels where not rusted trough but they needed a sandblasting and paint... I'm sure it won't move anymore and the vert wont see much rain... :d |

I can ask to the colourmen in our Glasurit shop if he want to give the mixing formula.... I don't know him very well but I will ask him. That is no garantee that this will match to the paint they use in the states. If we restore a car from the states we need to remove all the old paint becouse the material is diffrent and there is a lot of bondo on those cars (most of them) |

| Pascal, Looks great, I finaly found a picture from my mirror in a brochure :d Are you going to NINOVE?? Then I could take that pliers with me that you need for your rubbers ! Could you take a sample with you from the rubber that Heikki made ! Somebody told me there is a litlle different between split and zwitter rubbers  The original rubbers are still on my car so I could check that ! I'll remove a Window scraper this week , and check what it will cost to reproduce these ! Would these also be correct for oval cabrio? Don't tell me its a zwitter only rubber? Could you post a picture from the back side from your mirror ? Yes I know, A lot of questions:roll: Thanks, Guido |
| Posted by: vintagevw - 10 March 2009 20:06:16 |
|---|
| Hi Guido, Yes I'm going to Ninove. I'll took a picture of my rear vieuw mirror. The mirror is not the same as a normal beetle but much more rounded. I've inspected my original roofrubbers and there is no diffrence between mine and the ones from Heikki. Even in an early partsbook there are no diffrent numbers between split and zwitter vert roofrubbers. The windowscrapers are the same zwitter and oval verts till august 1955 that's for sure. I have to check in a later parts list book but I guess they will be the same till 1957. The wedges are also the same as oval verts till august 1955. I'm sure thee is a market for becouse nobody is making them correct! Here you have some pictures of the rear vieuw mirror, roofrubbers and windowscrapers. The left mirror is the vert one. The windowscrapers are much more rounded ten the repro's, the originals have the correct shape of the body and the repro's don't.... [-x |

| Thanks for posting the pictures Pascal ! So I take that pliers with me to Ninove ! IMO, there are a few small differences in the L profile rubbers that you are showing in the picture, just like a friend told me , I think those repro window scrapers you have there, will not fit like it should be on your car, take all those rubbers with you , so we can check them together in a pub in Ninove with a few Duvels on the table ! ! Don't forget the sunvisor ! Now I'm 100% sure I'll make the window scrapers for zwitters and ovals ! Maybe also the window scrapers for split beetles (sedan) somebody told me that the rubbers I made for the hood and decklid are also correct window scrapers for split beetles :?: :?: :?: ! But ET was giving me an in his opinion original scraper, and that rubber was not showing the 3 lines and was also a litlle wider ! So I'm still looking for the correct profil for these rubbers ! Cu, Guido |

| After a lot of research the electrical problem is solved. The fusebox was not the correct one.... :( after spending a lot of ours my mate Sidney found it out and solved the problem. I'm still looking for a correct lightswitch for zwitter and early oval as on the picture.. Someone haves it? Thanks. The engine is running and all the electric things are working... :d |

| :?: I noticed the note in the dashboard post ," that the starter button hole was too big". In my early Zwitter Cab the starter button is the same size/type as the one on my '52 standard, Ivory instead of black. The button on my later Zwitter Cab is the smaller common aluminum type. Have you ever seen the larger split button in the Zwitters before? My cars are original as far as I can tell.. David |

|
I know some people won't like this but I used a NOS 30 HP engine for the car. I used also a NOS one for my 1955 oval and it drives superb, believe me.:d Don't worry I have a 1952 25 HP engine but don't have the time to redone that engine, if I have more free time it will becomes OK!:d I still had some parts of the original 25 HP engine but the original 25 engine is gone a long time go.... Some parts are not correct for the engine but it looks very 25 HP  So don't shoot me!
 I cannot agree more, if you have a NOS engine then use it! My 50 has a nos industrial Swedish army engine 34hp! but with mushroom filter and lots of the nice 50 parts fitted to it also and we have a nos 356 industrial to fit in Owens 50, and just fitted a nos 356 engine into our 356 last year, nothing beats the wonderful as new power and drive and peace of mind! and yes we have the original knackered old stock engines in the garage collecting dust for the 'maybe in the future' event also  I love this thread  :d (I will get Owen to see if we have one of those switches) |

I will restore once my 1952 engine but that would take too much time (and money :d ) now to rebuild and restore it.... And a NOS engine is so great to drive... :) I found the correct switch in Hannover this friday. And some other parts too. Every year it is less and less but still worth to go there. It will be quiet next week, I will refresh and repaint my daughters "teenage" bedroom... Then I will move on! |

| I've installed the door and roofrubbers from Heikki. I got a special "rubberknife" from Guido and that was already a good start. To have the rubber slashed I used a small polish machine and used sandingpaper on it (P320) The rear roofrubber was nailed on both sides becouse they are fixed at the wooden part... The rubber who's on the frame is screwed. |

| Here is the story already in German. Sorry for the delay! | OK..... the moment you have all been waiting for... (to the sound of a fanfare of trumpets)- after all these months of anticipation here is the English translation (yes, we managed to find it). "Back in 1971, to celebrate passing my driving test, my parents gave me a 1952 dark-green VW Beetle cabrio. A real stunner. It had semaphores, an accelerator roller pedal and a starter button. Since there was no petrol gauge, I had to use a wooden dipstick to measure the fuel level. If I was running low (a not uncommon occurrence), I had to kick the fuel tap to switch to the reserve. One day, a Turkish friend invited my boyfriend (now my husband) and me to visit him in Istanbul. We didn’t hesitate for long before deciding to make the trip. During a precautionary service of the Beetle, we were advised against undertaking a journey of this magnitude in a 20-year old car. We paid no heed. We chose an idyllic route, taking the Yugoslavian coastal road, through the Montenegro mountains, then along the Albanian border to Alexandropolis in Greece, where we would camp for a few days in our tent. Our journey through the Montenegro mountains turned out to be a real adventure. After following a section that was clearly marked on the map, we suddenly found ourselves on an unsurfaced track. We were undaunted, but things didn’t turn out quite as we had expected. The track seemed to go on for ever. Not a village, a car or even a petrol station in sight, and our wooden dipstick showed that we were running dangerously low on fuel. After struggling along this rough track for 50 km this was the last thing we needed! The engine suddenly began to splutter and the car came to a standstill. My mood changed. My husband, remaining positive, had a look in the Beetle’s engine compartment. The oil-bath air filter was clogged up, thanks to all the dust. In the meantime, a group of men wearing turbans and carrying guns emerged from the neighbouring woods. We watched with great apprehension. I told my husband to get a move on. The filter was cleaned at lightning speed and, as luck would have it, we were able to continue on our way without having to make the acquaintance of these gentlemen. We made it to the town of Pec on our last few drops of petrol. As we drove in with the roof down, we were immediately besieged by hordes of children who jumped on to the Beetle’s running boards. Their hands were all over the inside of the car – in search of cigarettes, pens and sweets. We gave them whatever we had. We had survived this part of the journey. The Beetle gamely soldiered on until we reached Alexandropolis in Greece. Shortly after leaving Alexandropolis, the engine abruptly died and refused to start again. We finally managed to track down a mechanic, unfortunately he spoke only Greek but he did agree to take the job on. He wanted to connect a 12-volt battery to check the electrical system. We tried to stop him, since the Beetle only had a 6-volt system, but with a great deal of pointing and gesturing, he explained to us that there was no other way. So we let him. As soon as the 12-volt battery was connected, we noticed smoke coming from the headlamp switch in the dash. We had learned the Greek method of locating a short circuit. He installed a temporary switch and a new cable and the Beetle was resuscitated. We were ready to continue our journey to Istanbul. By the time we arrived there, we had travelled 3,500 km. Caught up in the Istanbul traffic, surrounded by old American road cruisers, the exotic sight of our cabrio proved a real head-turner. The trip home took us through Bulgaria and along the Yugoslavian “autoput” (a motorway in the former Yugoslavia). After a round trip of some 7,000 km, we finally arrived back home in Germany. After 32 years, I decided to auction my Beetle on eBay. A Belgian collector won the bidding. He is completely restoring the car with original parts and is documenting the whole story, including pictures, for us on the Internet. I am happy to know that my beloved cabrio is in such good hands." (c) Wee Jeanie Midnight Translations Ltd. :d A good story Pascal, and a journey which I think you should repeat with the restored cabrio... 8) |
