Thought it was about time I got some pictures on here of my own little project.
I got my 58 beetle last year, a 58 delux model 38k in first paint all original.
It was a little grubby having been spent the last 15 years in a garage, It also had done battle with a previous owners gate posts due to failing eye sight resulting in a couple of minor dings to the wings.
The plan. Strip it down repair the dents and repaint in original colour then rebuild with new rubbers / felts, a bit of re chroming. Keeping as much as original as possible.
When I say the car is original...... I think you will agree there can't be many around these days that look like this after you clean of the under seal :D

All the inner wings and seals look the same, protected for 50 years by the 'Zibart' (think thats how it's spent)

Yes you are right you dont see og paint and inner wings like that very often at all
I removed nasty thick underseal from Owens brown split and it was shiny under there (not nearly as perfect as yours though!) but the only problem is that once you have done it and marveled for ages at how lovely it is  you then get left with the decision whether to wax under there every now and then........forever  or enjoy it for a few years and then maybe waxoyl? I am thinking of doing that after a year or 2 more?
I must admit I have been looking at your avatar for a while wondering.. capri, fjord?? But you look metallic? its a nice colour, what is it? Are you taking it to Stanford Hall?
And you have got a Harlequin polo!!! I always wanted one of those! :D
Posted by: harveypj - 31 March 2008 20:40:40
The colour is L334 Glacier blue metalic (in German it apears a Firn Blu)
mine has actualy got darker and gone rather flat with age. The car is fully stripped now and the true colour is evident on the dash board, under the chrome and number plate etc.
My friend who is doing the paint for me has managed to get the correct formulatd paint from his supplier. It took them a while but the paint is a super match to the dash that will remain original.
Early metalics are a strange finish, lok a bit lke a very fine 'hamerite' finish, no where near as sparkly as modern paint. That was our main concern when originaly ordering.
My plan was to have the car done for Stanford hall but I'm behind schedule  so my absolute must is to be ready for Lavenham. :D
The Harlequin :D :D :D , is my wifes car, it was originaly the VW press car. We got it nearly 5 years ago with just 6 1/2k on the clock.
It featured with my MK2 GTI in VW motoring a few years back.
With the arrival of the Bug displacing my golf from its garage, I'm going to have to draft the golf into daily use (it can't stay in my mates garage for ever :( ). Owning a Passat as well somethings got to give.
So yep the Harlequin is up for grabs, I've been planning to prep it ready to advertise this spring at the shows etc.
I digress, but as you mentioned it.

I also used to own an August '57 Glacier Blue, low mileage car. It was a Swedish import with 50k KMs on the clock.

Speacial car - the condition of the inner wings is incredible.
Posted by: harveypj - 04 April 2008 22:29:51
Thanks Guys,
I'll sort out some more photo's soon, I'm in the process of rubbing down the body at the mo. It realy is in incredable condition.
The wings have all been blasted and the minor dents removed, which is great as they are the originals.
Also in the process of putting the engine back together after a strip down for a clean up and to replace all the gaskets.
(did not split the case or remove the heads0 the most intrusive job probably being replacing the rear crank seal. I'll fit a new clutch as well.
I'm getting Pete at 'Cogbox to referb the gearbox, as reverse had a tendancy to jump out and first was a bit noisy. He also does a small mod to stop the normal split box oil drip.
(the little clusters of welding on the wings are where retro fitted indicators were once located, I will not be re fitting them so had the screw holes gas welded)

you're mad to repaint that car!
or replace some of the og bits!
step away from the bodywork! & sell it to me!
i had a similar car in 1989, a 1961

the inner wings had a protective black coat on them, with shiny ruby red underneath...

Well i thought it and somebody else said it,totally agree Rock Stock.
There is no substitute for original.
100 point resto cars are beautiful, but that original car with 50 years of patina, will always be the best.
Posted by: harveypj - 11 April 2008 22:45:35
:o  :?
I agree, I would love to have left it as I found it, I'm not after a super shiny concours car. The dents I could have lived with. Unfortunantly early metalic paint does not have the same longtivity as the solid colours.
The laquer goes very flat (that I can live with, gives that lovely old patina)
but it also goes porous. Mine had done just that, when it got wet the paint got a lot darker as the moisture actualy soaked in to it, and would take seveal hours to dry out again :(
Not realy visible on the photos, but there was a lot of 'speckling' on the doors, rear quaters and on the sides of the roof.
On rubbing down the car the tiny specs turned into little 'rust worms' under the primer coat.
If I had done nothing my car would have slowly but surly deteriated.
I could not let this happen.
So I decided to repaint it, all the interior will remain original, headlining, carpet, seats, dash paint etc etc.
All the original exterior trim will go back on along with the running board etc.
I want to use my car regularly so a new durable coat of carefuly matched paint seemed like the right thing to do.
I would not realy call it a restoration (hense the title of this post) but if left it would have eventualy needed one.

Well, having removed all of my car's best feature, the under paint rusting :?
Here's how it looked this afternoon. Ready for priming that should if all went well have been done shortly after I left it.
After sanding and playing with my new grit blasting toy (great thing :D I got it from 'Machine Mart along with a 7.5Kg bucket of 80 grade grit for the grand old sum of £32. worth that alone just to get into the rear air grill) I treated the entire shell with 'por - metal ready'. If your not familiar it neutralises/disolves any iron oxide and etches the surface and leaves a coating of zinc sulphate.
All going well I will be flatting of over the next couple of days ready for top coat early next week :)

I've Just seen this whole thing on this '58 :!:
The car is (was) incredible. It was a car I would go straight over to and want to buy at any cost.
I'm sorry, but a repaint on a car like that is a mistake :!:
Though not restored, it will look more like any other less interesting (well to me) restored Beetle. Cars aged 50+ wearing their original paint are so rare and of course cannot be replaced. 1958 is one of the best Beetle years, and this car has the nicest colour too.
I have a 1949 Beetle that's never had a respray. The paint is far from perfect, but at 59 years old it wears its original paint with pride. It looks a survivor car, I don't think this '58 will now.
Re paints are a risk any way. They are never as good as the factory dipped high bake finish. There is always the risk of problems developing in the future with a respray. These things have happened to me in the past, and I have regretted resprays.
Anyway its been repainted now, a shame I think
Posted by: harveypj - 19 April 2008 23:07:52
Believe me guys, I thought long and hard about this. I am a real die hard purist when it comes to my cars, the more original the better, with that I could not agree more. I would have loved to keep the car in it's og paint. I know how special that is on a car of this age, but as I mentoned earlier I want to use my car when ever I can and plan to keep it for the long term.
I'd rather replace the paint now and avoid having to start making more intrusive repairs in the future. The photos I originaly posted are kind to the car, yes it is in amaizing condition.....for a 50 year old car, the photos do not show where the car is starting to show signs of its age. the paint was no longer water proof. the original steel had already started pitting under the original paint. I managed to rub most of these out. In a few years time with regular use this would have only got worse, then the first pin hole appears, then the first bit of welding is needed now my car is not strucurly 100% original and a local paint repair needed anyway.
I think it is a topic that will never realy have a right or wrong answer, yes my dream car would be 100% original rock solid complete with og paint, second choice never welded and rock solid.
I know I can have second choice, but risk having neither if I had left alone.
The pitting appeared alot wore once rubbed back to the steel than it does here.

at what point do you give up on OG paint? (especially the early metalics that weren't very good)

Yes, original paint is nice - but would you be prepared to see your car rust away in front of your eyes?
Posted by: JD - 20 April 2008 15:20:43
Wow - a respray!
Like you say, its a shame, but I suppose it needed to be done. I'm guessing that all was not as well as it appeared in the photos either. I was kind of wondering of it could have been clearcoated, but its kind of a moot point now.
I'm sure it'll look great when its done. Much more like it did when new in fact.
8)
Posted by: harveypj - 20 April 2008 20:51:49
Clearcoating is kind of 1/2 a respray anyway, it would have made for a shiny finish on an old weathered base which I thought personaly would have looked odd. Besides which, would you normaly respray over rust and not expect it to re-appear?
As you say, its all a bit trivial now anyway.
The top coat is schedualed for Tuesday afternoon, I'll post some pics.
Posted by: JD - 20 April 2008 22:53:02
You are right - clearcoating would probably not have helped.
I look forward to the pics anyway.

Posted by: harveypj - 25 April 2008 00:19:55
All went well and the body was painted on Tuesday, I'm very pleased with the result, Martin (my painter friend) thined the laquer a little more than he does for more modern cars so he could achieve a more authentic depth and texture to the final finish. No machine polishing was required either (as to plan). The colour is also a good match. The pictures show the new paint compaired to the best bits of original (decklid protected by the no plate and the ash tray). The paint is 'ici' and mixed to the original formula the laqure is by 'Glacurit'.

I must admit I was pretty shocked when I realised that you had repainted this car! As said above, it is the difference between a car I would home in on at a show for a good look regardless of condition.
My new original paint car is just 3-4yrs behind yours and my paint is no where near as good as yours was but still I feel well worthy of being maintained/preserved original. But I will admit that mine will rarely even go outdoors ( I am very happy just owning it in my garage! )
So given that you plan to use yours a bit, a new coat of paint is fine. Although my only observation about bare metalling a car on which vw factory paint has lasted 50yrs already is that no repaint will ever be as hardy or last as long as that 50's original paint. The factory process/dipping etc just cannot be recreated as well. Usually most people are lucky if a repaint lasts 15years before blemishes start appearing. Usually less.
I do appreciate what you mean about metallics going flat, 'rough' & porous though.
but hey, the car is looking pretty good again so far.
The colour match looks super! I think your painter has done a great job with matching such an odd and difficult colour!
:D

I did not have a lot of option realy, I had to to remove the rust spots. You'll notice I did not go to bare metal on the inner wings as there was no rust there and I have not on the bonnet either. As I have mentioned before the rust 'speckling' on the surface ended up looking like little brown worms under the under coat :( , This had affected most of the bodywork. Probably as a result of standing in an old garage for the last 15 years. If the car had none of this I would not have re painted it in the first place, I was not bothered about the dents and dull paint, I liked it.
The gearbox is with Pete at 'Cogbox' now should be done midle of next week. (That had to be done as reversing was a problem)
I'm on schedual to have the car back on he road for begining of June.
It's first major outing will be Lavenham, can't wait :)
It will be great to meet all you guys there (I asume most of you will be there)

I'll sort some more out. Its in a mechanic friends workshop at the mo.
I pick the gearbox up on Monday, I've finnished putting the engine back together so will take that to the workshop on Monday as well so they can go in together, then I can get her back home in my garage for the refit :D :D Thats going to be fun, Every thing I took of has all been cleaned and ready to go back on. I've even brushed and oiled all the original nuts, bolts and washers. There not perfect but it got rid of all the old road grot and snot. I don't want new shiny ones although I might use some stainless to fix the running boards back on, you cannot realy see them and it may help protect the seals. not decided yet.
I took the opertunity to re 'Waxoyl' the underside while the running gear is removed. (great stuff waxoyl), must remember to do under the running board covers before I refit them to the car.

Harvey I am flabergasted at the pictures of your 58 beetle. Your painter put a lot of time into mixing the Glacier Blue color which might I add is the best match I have ever seen. My problem is that I live in California (USA) and for 2 months now I have searched and searched for a shop to duplicate my 58 Ragtop Glacier Blue color. My car has faded tremendously and the previous owner resprayed it but not in Glacier Blue. Either way it stands right now I have been trying my hardest every day to get a color match to respray my 58 back to it's original color. I swear I am almost out of HAIR on my head and I am only 29yrs old. Please if there is any way I can obtain a proper FORMULA for the L334 Glacier Blue I will be in your debt forever. Here is what I have right now and by gosh this car will be resprayed GLACIER BLUE come hell or high water.
For some reason photobucket is not letting me post a picture of my VW??? I will try to re post some time a pic of the car. Please Thank You for any input on a FORMULA L334 Glacier Blue.
Posted by: harveypj - 29 October 2008 00:16:38
Thanks, it is a great colour
I'll have a word with Martin my painter, his paint supplier managed to get an original formula it took them quite a while to fnd it. I know they had to specialy order some of he tints, ones they had not used before.
Oficialy its a metalic, but the early metalics come up almost pearly looking, the metal fleck is alot more subtle (softer)than modern ones.
Not sure about in the states but here in the uk we are in the middle of paint specs changing from solvent based to water based, My 58 was done using 2k paint. If I were to order the paint now it would probably have to be in water based and may come up a little different. ( I have 4Ltrs spare for this reason )
I'll see what I can do regarding formula and contacts.

Harvey I cannot express enough gratitude for your help. I can get just about any type of paint here in the US, some are harder than others to obtain. Even just a phone # and a name to call for the info would be good. Any info at this point and time is better than what I have found.
God Bless You Harvey and your Beautiful 58.

Have you tried 'Glacurit', I thought they would have had a formula.

Maybe It's just me and I am not using their website properly but I have tried and came up with nothing.
Just went back to Glasurit and searched again. All that came up was Atlas Blue.:?

I love that car even more now- 100 bonus points to you Pete for doing the car justice. I just wish that I had bought it when I had the chance
Anyhow, It inspired me to wheel my unrestored Welsh '59 out of the garage a few weeks ago. Mine has been off the road since 2002, so I decided to get it running and take it for a spin ;) Late 50's RHD bugs are the best 8)

Cheers George. We tried something different - a studio shoot but adding a similar coloured lighting. I wasn't at the shoot, but from what our head designer Neil told me - he thought Peter was a bit concerned we were going to mock the stock - by being too jazzy with the pics. As you know George, that's not what we're about! Thankfully to coloured lighting really worked well, just how we wanted it to, and it makes the feature another unique high quality one from VolksWorld. It shows we're always looking to try something new.
Oh, and I've really got to say nice one to Peter for doing the car. It has honestly been one of the highlights of 2008 for me. When I saw it at Peppercorn it made my day. And he's a top bloke too.

A stunning car, and you were definitely right to repaint it and preserve the car in a condition from which it won't deteriorate easily 8)

Not to take over, but I think the majority of the tin is still in OG paint. With a few areas carefully touched up.
The colour or stock tin was definately satin, not gloss.

The only engine parts I painted were the cylinder shrouds, rocker covers and the coil. I used 'PJ1 fast black engine and case paint'. Its intended for the motorcycle market. It cures onto the metal requiring no primer and is good to around 200degsC. It dries a satin finish and can be further polished up to match the glossyer finish of the original.
There is always lots of debade as to the correct sheen that should be on the tin ware.
The majority of my engine wares its original paint including the air filter that still has the original decal intact and the paint finish is deffinantly gloss, as is the fan housing.
I've got a feeling later cars may be satin finish, but in my opinion the earlier cars (6 volt) should be a gloss type finish. (sorry Will:twisted: )
I only done the rear axle/breaks as I had the gearbox sorted. I used Por15 again a gloss finish.
Its a similar product to 'smootherite'. The smooterite/hammerite paint in black however is the wrong colour, its what I'd call a browny black...too rich. The original colour is a neutral black, the other end of the spectrum being slate or greyish blacks. and you thought black was black
Posted by: Robb - 22 February 2010 19:12:54
brill, yer its hard to know where to stop!
yer i think i'll re-paint the axle tubes and rear brakes etc, along with all the front axle assembly and then just do a dusting of black waxoil on the pan itself as we spoke about a while ago.
thanks for the info :d
Posted by: harveypj - 22 February 2010 19:18:30
I was considering taking the frond axle out and giving it a freshen up but decided against it. I'll wait until the link pins or something like that wear out...so probably never:lol:
If I get it too clean underneath I will not want to drive it.
Posted by: Robb - 22 February 2010 19:26:31
yer im not going to go too mad, no powdercoat or blasting, just a thorough cleaning and repaint. :)

I agree that the engine wear should be a glossy type finish. Mine was/is all original and needed touching up. A buff of the originals with original white paint OG marks showed this.
The car looks superb, well done on your decisions, I think you did the right thing.
Pete
Posted by: Robb - 23 February 2010 20:58:43
i think the finish should be semi gloss, but try finding a powdercoater that will do that!
didnt Roy Wilson, he of the zenith blue 67 repaint his tinware satin black after getting marked down by the concourse judges for it being glossy?
Posted by: harveypj - 23 February 2010 21:23:41
He did, but even he's still not sure what is correct:? he was looking at mine last year at Stanford Hall. Don't know who the judge was? They are not always correct.
I can only draw conclution from what I have in my garage, 67 is also quite a bit later than mine, may be around the time the finish changed to a more satin one?
Maybe the factory finish varied for what ever reason, paint batch, suplier etc.
Posted by: Robb - 23 February 2010 21:29:44
yer maybe, but i have to say, what is left of my of tinware paint, its def a semi gloss. But it all needs re-doing...so guess itll either have to be gloss or satin powdercoat :?

I had my floorpan and all my tinware powder coated semi gloss black without a problem.
Posted by: Robb - 23 February 2010 22:33:10
may i ask who you used?
thanks :)
Posted by: TEXAS PETE - 24 February 2010 10:45:52
The powder coater compared my tin wear to finishes he could achieve and said it was a glossy/semi gloss finish. This is what I went for as it matched the original finish. (so powder coaters can do a semi gloss.)
As for judges not always being correct!? it’s criminal if they can make a call based on their opinion and not facts.
Also I think on higher mileage cars the tin wear could become less and less glossy over a period of time due to the high temperatures generated from the engine. (just my opinion, thought id add that) :)

Of course:
https://www.blastcleanandcoatings.co.uk/
£350 for the floorpan, be aware that there may uncover areas that need repairing. They will not repair it.
£100 for the tinware
Posted by: Robb - 26 February 2010 12:47:58
thanks,
i may have to go for satin black, as 3 places local to me dont do semi-gloss, or when i ask them, they say satin is semi gloss

Thanks for sharing the video harveypj. Surely that’s 100% confirmation of tin wear gloss? It also shows the engines being built with there blue leads..:)
Pete
Posted by: harveypj - 28 February 2010 16:55:46
That particular version of the documentry is an Australian one, you may have noticed the Grey floorpans.
There is also an earlier German version filmed in the 50's
Posted by: TEXAS PETE - 28 February 2010 17:48:26
Yeah, I wonder why they did that.. I like the way they state each car needs to pass the 83 mechanical tests before they can move on to the next stage. I wonder if many fell short and needed re-addressing.
I’ll have to have a look for the other video i dont think i've seen it.

PJ1 engine and case paint, polish it to the gloss finish your happy with.
It also results in a kind of aged look.
Posted by: Robb - 28 February 2010 22:40:39
yer need to hunt for that stuff, as Halfords here dont do it.
never been marked down for that im guessing?
Posted by: JD - 28 February 2010 22:58:11
A friend of mine collects old lightweight bicycles and has very expertly aged his resprays on a couple of them using a mixture of T-cut and oil. Gives an everso slightly flat sheen to the paint. Might be worth a try.

I love the car harveypj, did you show it at the Volksworld show last year? I might've seen it at Karmann Konnection as well.
I've just bought a '59 type 1, slightly different to yours as it's an ex drag strip car but I love the stock look on pre 60's bugs, it suits it very well!
Glad to know there's another 50's bug in Essex.
