I should leave it,
Just have fun to drive it and take it to Hessisch Oldendorf this year!
If you don't like to drive it you can always sell it to me!

If its original paint leave it, if its not then still leave it! IMHO!
Our 55 is is its original colur (a very good match) but was resprayed in 87! The paint is still good and we have no desire to respray it!
But at the end of the day it is your choice and you should do what you feel is righyt for both you but more importantly the car! If the paint is going to make the body deteriorate then in my opinion it needs doing now rather than in a few years when it may need welding
Possibly a similar situation to Peter Harvey and his 58
Yet another brown car on pre67, what does that mkae it now? Three I think!

And the saga continues!
Hope you dont mind me linking to your thread, just thought it made a very good point! Originality is best but having a car that rots in front of you eyes isnt!

How bad is the paint?
just remember: rust only ever gets worse.
Paint it now or...... weld it later,in which case you'll have to paint it anyway.

Agreed!
Thats been my ethos with my 63! It had a few bits of rust bubbling in the gutters so I decided to dig it out and repaint the gutters! I will not look as good when it is finished but I can be happy knowing that the car will not need major welding in a few years time!
This will not add value to my car but it will give me peace of mind!

True and I have no intention of selling!
All I need to do now is find the little S**T driving around with my original engine! A garage a few years ago supposedly replaced the engine becasue it was "knackered" and then the owner of the garage was driving around with the engine in the back of his 63!
I WILL find it!

all original apart from the wheels according to Volkszone!
Bloody rare, well done!
Posted by: dry&heavy - 25 January 2009 21:52:25
yeh the one thing i thought missing/changed was the interior light but it's got the one without a switch so happy about that
all trim and handles are dull chrome and the ashtray does'nt have the handle
plus the seat's have been covered at some point but the original cloth seats are still underneath in good order:d
one of the heart tail lights has been replaced with a blue one but easy to change colour
also missing one runner board, batwing horn in steering wheel, and front wolfsburg badge
was missing glove box front but vw garden helped me out with that already

How cool would that be, the best bits of both era car in one!

OOh Its lovely! :d
( I am still totally amazed you found 2 almost identical zwitters at the same time! )
For me, and because it looks like it is still shiny! I would try first to keep it waxed constantly and not paint it. My oval I wax because it is beige so the 'white' wax residue is ok, but our brown 50 that is a bit more surface rusty and also brown is ankor waxed which works perfectly because the wax/oil is also brown.
But if you do decide to ankor wax and then later decide to repaint it you will have problems getting it off and new paint over.
Its a decision alright! :?

Sadly he would have to buy it for me! and he says not unless I let him have my oval to sell as a swap, no no no! [-x I told him thats not what professional-multi-car-hoarding is all about! and he should know better than to make such poor jokes!*! But he is enforcing strict new rations! ( luckily the new 65bus arrived Saturday, the day before they came into effect! )

quick update
car is almost finished, a solid little thing in the end, have been told by the garage that has pulled the car apart it will go straight through the MOT no problem at all.
 Now i need a 1952 gearbox as mine needs some TLC, fingers crossed im hoping it is only the set up of the linkage, but incase its not, does anyone in england have a suitable gearbox they wish to sell that i can pick up staright away, i have two people on the case looking for one but if they both fall through maybe someone on here can help?
so i can then use this gearbox while i have the origional gearbox in the car reconditioned
many thanks

Noy that I have anything! We currently have no working gearboxes!

well only spare box i have was out of a 59 but havent got round to having 1st gear fixed as that's the spare for my 59 :d
just my luck
as soon as the gearbox is in will have the MOT and will be on the road straight away
Posted by: dry&heavy - 18 February 2009 10:06:19
well found a box came out of a 55
but i dropped of 2 split boxes on sunday, one to have 1st gear fixed and the 55 just so i know its good
was a nice old man it's all his ever done for 46 years working on gearboxes
so at least i will have a spare box, when the 52 box is out will take that over to him as well, and for £75 plus parts cheap as chips
so should have one back by next week :d

Used to have a pastel green '53.
I'd love another Zwitter, they are the perfect vintage VW for driving, the best of all worlds.
Other brown one in Sweden is just a little too much ££££'s,but it's a beaut.
So if any one has a Zwitter they want to sell, let me know.(preferably Brown):d

I have already started buying very sweet panels from Wolf.:p
The more I've gotten in to this Zwitter thing the more I like the idea of keeping them as original as possible.

i was originally offered your zwitter about 5 or 6 years ago when it was still in sweden, then kieftenklok got hold of it, then the bloke in gatwick, then someone else?, i had a cheeky look over it the other day when it was parked outside your garage, very cool car, still has the original heater channels which is nice, i rang the number you gave me for that green zwitter, but the bloke never answers his phone, do you know if its still for sale?, got about 5k to play with.

That's a lovely car George. Trouble is, shipping and duty will absolutely kill you from NZ since the oil price hike. You can probably add £2k Sterling on top of that price for RoRo shipping plus tax.

Not quite sure about the colour either. Looks like Inca Red (possibly) 1956 'vert colour.
