well hello to all, well im a newbe to your site and i would like to show you my car and it rebirth!!! it all started back in may of last year, i had my eye on a 60 rhd rag top for some 10yrs trying to buy it but to no avail. then last year on my birthday may the 3rd i went along to see my friend andy, some of you might know of him he lived in the woods at gunhill east sussex??? know as vw auto revival?? well to cut a long story short!! he finaly sold it to me on my b/day i paid the grand sum of £1000 pound which i thought was a good price???? what does everyone else think??. the car stayed in his yard till november 7th then i had the sad news andy was very ill so i aranged to collect the car and see how he was, sadley andy passed away on the 11th r.i.p andy. so now i have made it my goal to rebuild my car in andy memories. well thats enough of the dit, right here we go (sorry to the purst on here) the car started its life as a rhd rag top then some were in its life (before me) it inherited a steel split rear section i was going to remove it but it's been done so well i have decided to leave it there. it was origanly turkis with the interior matching ie: green steering wheel hand brake lever and grab handle, ive been told (how correct) im not sure but these were a ltd run of cars???. the car is now home and i have stripped it down to a bare shell as it need so much work all the bottom 6" front and rear valences bonnet engine lid etc. i have brought nos doors bonnet and deck lid so on with the resto, i built myself this frame/rotissorie to work on the car. i am building a couple more that i will be selling if anyone is intrested???????. thats enough tping there will be plenty more to follow., this is how i found my rag on her way home to start resto as you can see she has the wrong engine lid cover and reg. then got her stripped to this now sitting on my spit!!! Welcome to pre67. Great little project you got there. However I would have to say that you should remove the split rear window section as a RHD small window ragtop bug is a pretty rare thing these days and unless you're not keeping it stock it just won't look right. Considering the amount of work you've done and by the looks of it are going to do it should be relatively easy to remove!

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 12 September 2009 19:12:32
well i have toyed with the idea, but it's trying to find the missing window section..... are these early rhd rag tops rare??? not sure on the numbers???

Posted by: pre67vw - 12 September 2009 21:07:06
Welcome to the forum... I'd leave the split window in, it's not original obviously - but it's now part of the cars history (and looks kinda kool).

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 12 September 2009 21:23:53
well thank you i feel welcomed and i thinkit does give my car the one off factor, its like a split personality???

Posted by: Rich Oakley - 12 September 2009 22:45:58
Welcome to pre67vw! I only live a few miles away from you and drove past your car a few times when it was parked on the main road at Cooksbridge. The first time I saw it, I thought it was a genuine Split so had to stop and take a closer look! My personal opinion is that the large rear window should be re-instated if you can get your hands on one. Good luck with the project.

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 12 September 2009 23:02:52
thats the one rich, im still not decided on the window?? if your ever passing more than welcome to popin and have a look and a chat the kettle is allways on regards rick

Posted by: Sunroof53 - 12 September 2009 23:57:19
You could sell that split window section to recoup your cost if you choose to go back to stock, maybe even some profit.I personally think it would make some nice wall art8) . Keep up the good work theres plenty of support on here:d

Posted by: JD - 13 September 2009 01:07:12
Pleas don´t weld on the entire lower rear quarter panel repair section! Cut it down and use as little as possible and save as much of that good quality original VW steel as you can.

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 13 September 2009 10:01:24
thanks for all you replys i will be thinking hard over the next few weeks about the rear screen, as for cutting the rear 1/4 thats as far as its being cut the german metal is far stronger than the repair panels, i will be posting all my works on the forum (hope i don't boar you all) as for the advice the more the merry i belive you can't ever have enough advise??? now the biggest choice i want to paint the (not personaly) i have two choice's in colours i prefer coral red L351 just love this colour or put it back to turkis???? please help give me your thought's. regards rick:beer:

Posted by: Rich Oakley - 13 September 2009 12:31:03
I reckon back to Turkis. I think it would be great to see such an unusual car returned back to how it left the factory. You actually have a '61 model there (ie: manufactured after July 1960). The '61 Turkis Beetles were unique as they had a lot of 'one year only' colour-coded parts (steering wheel, gear stick, handbrake, rubber mats, passenger grab straps, dashboard grab handle, rear kick-boards, sunroof cover, running board covers and one-year-only 6-wire indicator stalk).

Posted by: dry&heavy - 13 September 2009 12:44:26
i would say keep it turkis also but saying this coral red is nice as i just got my australian 59 coral red back yesterday, so back to this as my daily ride now so i may sell that 52 rich as im after a 51 now

All Turkis '61s came with these coloured parts. There are not many original RHD Turkis '61s left now.

Likewise, if you're ever passing thru B.Hill, you're more than welcome to pop in.

have i stumbbled acrossed a hens tooth?????????????????????

Posted by: JD - 13 September 2009 19:14:51
The Turkis coloured cars have some unusal stuff on them, like coloured running boards and wing beading IIRC. They look quite unusual when restored in this colour. Hens tooth? Well, it´s a RHD sunroof car, but if you want to start splitting hairs about colour and so on then I should say its pretty unusual. Doesn´t mean its worth a fortune though. 1302s are rare!

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 13 September 2009 19:26:21
well its never going to be for sale ever, so the money side is not a issue this car was a very good friend of mine who sadley passed away so thats one reason i will not sell it, the other is it's a pre-67 rhd rag top what some dreams are made of :p  :d
so could i be the only rhd 60/61 turkis goldie rag top in the uk/maybe the world that would be so cool and make my bug unique worth a lot of pennys?
Well it could well be and I can assure you if it is, it will be worth a lot more penny's restored with it's original sized rear window than with a Frankenstein Split implant!
1302s rare hehe i gave one away for free the other month :p :p
Thats exactly what I meant - rare doesn´t necessarily equal valuable. (I have heard several times that 1302s are now rarer than split Beetles)

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 14 September 2009 09:48:42
well thanks to all who have written in i love my bug wether its rare or not it'sa early 60's bug rhd and a rag top to boot plus it could be one of only a hand full or les bugs. i will keep you all in touch with my turkis gem on her great build up:beer: :o  :d

From theSamba - some inspiration. Notice the coloured running boards, wing beading and rag top and green steering wheel, hand brake and shifter. All really distinctive. Here's a RHD non sunroof car. Unfortunately and unbelievably this car was broken up earlier this year in order that the body could be made into a race car  . It had little milage on it therefore was pretty solid! well ive got six month's hard work ahead of me if i want to be at sandown park for the volksworld show in march wish me luck.......... one thing is for sure i will have to either build my workshop or find one to rent as the weather and time of year are aginst me!!!!!!!!!!

am looking for a cheap workshop/barn type building to put the bug in so i can work as the elements are against me with in 15mls from lewes area any ideas please let me know cheers rick:beer:

Posted by: Rich Oakley - 16 September 2009 11:15:30
Rick, I have been looking for years to find one at a reasonable price, but everywhere seems to be 'business rate' type workshops. If you find anywhere, I may well be interested to share the space/cost. There were some units in Plumpton that I looked at a while ago, but they were tiny and expensive. We need to find a friendly farmer who has a spare barn! Rich.

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 16 September 2009 11:34:43
there is one in plumpton at the mo? 3000sqft £116pw £58 each ive just spoke to the bloke he don't mind motor works there are some that as soon as you say cars they go all funny???...........

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 16 September 2009 11:49:34
very true but its also harder to get a mortgage these days than a workshop, was building a 26ft x 20ft workshop in my back garden but due to lack of work and no extra funds its on hold shame cos it would have been ideal

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 16 September 2009 11:52:33
also down here in lewes you couldn't even afford to buy the doubble garage with a £500 pound mortgage??? to dear down here but i do know where you are coming from.............
also down here in lewes you couldn't even afford to buy the doubble garage with a £500 pound mortgage??? to dear down here but i do know where you are coming from.............
It is difficult to find cheap workshops/garages even round here (Milton Keynes). 10yrs ago, I used to share a small workshop on a farm. An old stable with space for two cars, power and light for £120 a month which was okay. Then I moved to a house with a double garage and stopped renting. I've grown the fleet so now I have two cars stored on the same farm again @ £60 a month each! :d

My brother lives on Allington Lane (off the PLumpton / Ditchling road) about half way between Burgess Hill and Lewes. His neighbour lets out workshops on his farm and there always seems to be units for let - don't know the cost but it might be worth trying there. The Guys name is Mr Botting and the farm is Allington farm - I'll try and get the phone number for you. Mike

Allington Farm Allington Lane Offham, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 3QL. p: 01273473310. I'll be at Heritage tonight, probably in the Polo but may be in the '47. I'm currenly renting storage space for a few of my cars, but I can't work on them there. I've just also found out that I'll be spending most of my time working in Sweden rather than the UK, so an 'expensive' workshop space is probably not an option for me at the moment as I'll never be able to use it!

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 17 September 2009 17:09:55

We have a nos 'update' rear window section somewhere, but I would have to ask him indoors as I think its for hoarding not selling, kind of too good to actually use  A section cut from a scrap car will certainly be far cheaper, might have one I will find out.

Thanks, Rich! Was it just the Turkis models that had these one off colour combinations? Interested in the history behind these changes.
Thanks, Rich! Was it just the Turkis models that had these one off colour combinations? Interested in the history behind these changes.
Black, Ruby Red and Gulf Blue 61s had the 'normal' colour parts. Turkis and Pastel Blue had these 'one year only' parts for 7 months until 28/2/61. Beryl Green and Pearl White '61s had the 'one year only' parts for the entire duration of the '61 model year (Aug '60 to Jul '61). Normality was resumed in August '61 for the '62 model year on all cars except Beryl Green which still had it's odd colour parts for the '62/'63 model years.
Thanks for that Rich. That´s one of those "always wanted to know that" things. Pastel blue cars had darker blue parts - what was on the white cars as a contrasting colour? Was it a sort of brick red? The other thing I wondered was if there were any cabrios with these coloured parts? Or were Karmann not playing the game? I had the remains of a Beryl green cabrio that seemed to have green bits on it, but it was too un-original to be sure if they came on the car. Glad to hear that things are progressing Southerndeluxe. Look forwards to seeing pics.

The rear kick boards and rubber mats were also Honey Brown. All the cabrios followed the same colour schemes as the Sedans.
cheers jd does anyone know what material its made from i know mr o will know lol:wink:
I think people just repair them with regular body filler if they're not too badly damaged and cracked.

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 24 September 2010 10:14:51
thatnks for that rich i was thinking of using either fibaglass filler or a little resin and fibers then a very slight skim of topping filler followed but high build primer then three coats of turkis followed by sum laquer mmm nice new wheel

Posted by: JD - 24 September 2010 10:40:26
I think people just repair them with regular body filler if they're not too badly damaged and cracked.
I used a two part resin/chemical metal type stuff on a Lowlight Ghia wheel that I was repairing, but that was cracked right down to the metal, with big lumps missing. I´d maybe skim it with filler afterwards, as that´s not so hard to sand down. Your wheel shouldn´t be Turkis should it? It needs to be a darker green.
All the cabrios followed the same colour schemes as the Sedans.
So there were Turkis Cabrios with the dark green parts? Thats bad. Means I´ll have to buy one.

'Scuse my idleness, I haven't read through the whole of this thread. Is the car's split-window a real steel one or a plastic section.:? Looks like a repro section to me though.

Plus take a look at the section of the forum it's in...
Rob's having a pop at old Rattletrap. [-x  Yes I know its under the 57-67 thread and is certainly not a real split window Beetle, and …
…it inherited a steel split rear section i was going to remove it but it's been done so well i have decided to leave it there.
but hey, come on, look at the way its slotted into the rectangular widow aperture…. The kits were made to fit exact into the donor car rear window shape. The kits were plastic, however. If you cut the rear window section from a wrecked split window Beetle it would not be like that….. You'd also cut away the whole lower rear area of the big window car's roof. Then look at this too…

Hi there, I was so excited to hear that someone has decided to restore Andy's beetle. Myself and my boyfriend knew Andy well. He did all the wealding on Boris - my 1966 Java Green and My boyfriend's 1970 Crew cab. We used to pop up to visit him and say hi to his norwegien Elkhound dogs and see how he was getting on from time to time. We were really upset when we heard he had died so good luck with your project and I really want to hear how you are getting along and if I can be of any help with the restoration. x Leane :d

Posted by: southerndeluxe - 23 March 2011 08:37:40
thanks leane for your mail, it was very sad about andy a nice gentle man that kept himself to himself a big part of vw went with him rip andy. yer im going to restore it back to its forma glory, not sure what happened to all the other vw's that were in the yard ?????

Nice! Shouldn't be too difficult to get this section though? Did it change into the 70's or can you get a cut from a slightly later car?

Posted by: pre67vw - 13 June 2012 14:11:28
yer up till 64 they have a small rear screen then got bigger in 65
So where did the extra size come from? Because aren't the vents the same size?

im not sure ???

Posted by: AW - 13 June 2012 14:44:18
I think the depth and width is bigger but you may be able to modd a later bit to fit just need to chcek the radius on the lower corners. Andy W
