For many moons I fancied an early beetle, but stuggled to find one that hadn't been messed with. Cut a long story short I found this one in Holland, but had come from England some 3/4 years previously and having been owned previously by a well known poster on these forums:wink: I took a long drive to Holland from my home in Devon with my brother to find this one tucked away, unfortunately P and O wouldn't allow trailers on the ferry without 24 hrs prior notice so we had no choice other than to bump start the car and drive it 500 miles home, which we achieved in a respectable 11 hours including the ferry. Anyway the car flew through its MOT and I have driven it ever since for the last 2 1/2 yrs without any attention other than an oil change. I bit the bullet this winter and inspired by LT's Barn Find 57 thread I decided a sympathetic overhaul of the underpinnings but maintain the exterior look / patina. Any way I decided that I had enough projects of my own so called on the services of Ben Lewis of EvilBen fame in Cornwall to carry out the overhaul. Some pics for you all to see

:d I had some fun times with that car. Another poster here(vintagebug)owned it as well.I owned it twice over the years buying it back from him after a while.Super solid car. KET is a sheffield plate, that's where i purchased it from.It had been floating around Yorkshire for years.

Great post Ian and I'm glad to see it's in safe hands with Ben and Co. This is one of my all-time favourite 'UK' deluxes imported in 1953 from Germany, most probably by an ex-serviceman from Rotherham- it spent most of it's life there as George mentioned. I can't believe how solid it is! You need to bin those '48 hubcaps though ;)

Remember this car from a long way back, KET. How can a car that has been in this country for so long be so good:?: Great see it has such a keen owner:beer:
How can a car that has been in this country for so long be so good:?
Because it has had a few good owners who have taken care of it! I owned it for a few years in between George's two spells and it was a very very solid car. I can't recall finding any welding anywhere on it. Very original! I drove it to Bad Camberg back in 1999, in a small convoy with George (in his black sunroof '52 he had at that time), Keith Lessiter's '49 standard & Keith's Oval (driven by his son). The whole trip was trouble-free except for a broken fanbelt on KET which required a stop to fix it in the rain on the motorway in the middle of Antwerp if I recall... I should've kept hold of that car... Glad it's obviously in good hands now, Ian! Dave Btw, does anyone know what happened to Keith Lessiter's '49 after he sold it (reg was 49 STD, what a, ahem, coincidence  )
Because it has had a few good owners who have taken care of it! Dave
Aha you were the other owner, I think it had you as the previous owner on the V5 when I bought it, luckily the guy in Holland never returned the DVLA form declaring it had been exported, so I was able to retain the original 6 digit plate:d Yes someone had carefully brushed the underside with grease, which although messy has preserved the car beautifully, probably far better than any underseal treatment 8)

But I've not seen the car for quite a few years, so who knows...
It was a great car that my friend Harvey Simpson found in Belgium around the same time that he found my '49. Geoff Marks bought it from Harvey and stripped it down. Geoff was well annoyed when a chroming company lost some parts he'd taken in, and sold it on to Keith still dismantled I believe. It was Pearl Grey but Keith wanted to paint it Bordeux Red same as my '49. He even came over and borrowed a sample, (fuel filler cap) to have a match. He did an amazing job, hope its okay today.

Floorpan and suspension components are off to be sandblasted this week. My attentions have turned to the engine. When I purchased the car it was fitted with a 30hp motor although it did come with the original 25hp motor which unfortunately had been stripped down and many of the parts were missing. So being a speed freak I decided to build a 'hot' period looking motor. I managed to aquire a good used 30HP case, first treatment was a good steam clean: I managed to find a very nice 30HP 72mm stroker crank from DPR in the US. I also tracked down a rather nice genuine early pre-A 356 'OT' pulley to complete the look. Today I cleaned the flywheel and assembled the crank ready for dynamic balancing. I started collecting my parts some time ago prior to the availability of the WW Okrasa copy kits, so I had Jeff Denham in the US refurb my heads, the stainless valves and seats are a one off custom made by Manley, Jeffs head work is legendary! I found a nice set of tin ware which I had sandblasted and sent down to Ben for some gentle treatment and a satin black powdercoat. Note the correct 25hp seamed fan shroud (thanks George:smile: ) I am on the lookout for some NOS or good condition used 30HP barrels and pistons if anyone has a set lurking ??

Took the 51 out the other night and half way home started coughing and spluttering and died. By process of elimination the new rotor arm and distributor cap seemed to be at fault  replacement with an old brown cap and rotor arm and good as new, why are replacement parts so shite :? Anyway nice morning for a spin, and warm enough to open the crotch coolers

It's looking superb, Ian. Fill us in on what you've done to it since your last post. No chance of me getting my Oval out today, not even to change the oil & get it ready for the "summer" (that was the plan for this weekend)- it's typical West of Scotland weather today ie. p*ssing down :(

I did have another thread on KET but I am not sure where it went, I haven't done a lot since Ben and Co did the underside resto 2+ years ago. I took the 30hp engine out and painted all of the tinware so that looks better, but I am really trying to find all of the few missing incorrect parts. The original matching number 25hp engine is currently being rebuilt and slowly I have managed to source things like post march 51 heater boxes and head tin which was missing from the car and like hens teeth to find, hopefully after the summer I will have the original 25hp motor back in and detailed. I am still trying to locate a K manifold though ! I have also fitted correct repro running boards from Mika in Finland, I rewired the car with one of John Henry's wiring looms so now the electrics are really good, so lots of little things which have improved it. There are always things needed and early parts seem to be very hard to find and eye watering expensive, I really need a pair of correct windscreen wipers but the prices are shocking  My long term plan is just to make the car 100% correct but leave it 'as is' which is slightly ratty, the kids love messing about in it too which I think would be a big 'no' if it was pristine..... After leaving the car sat in the garage for some time I decided to finish sourcing parts to complete the original 25hp motor, I abandoned the 'hot' 30hp motor idea. The car came with the correct matching numbers case but unfortunately it was missing all of its parts. I managed to buy a couple of1950 and 1951 motors, both of which were fairly complete
