| It's at Car Transplants (a large breakers/salvage yard). It's looks fire damaged, so it's probably a "Cat A" or "Cat B", i.e. salvage only. That's probably why the entire shell isn't for sale. |

| £44,000 for the van?! How can it be original when it's had a respray? And is that an ill fitting door and engine lid or are they just not latched properly? |

| Some interesting comments here. If you owned these cars what money would you want and ask? Be honest now. There is only a recession for some. There seems to be plenty of cash around for old busses. Most are bought by 'VW lifestyle' and not VW enthusist people. |

|
You did not answer my question. If you owned these cars what price would you ask?
I'm not sure I like your tone Rudy. Sadly I can tell you myself and two friends sold our very nice but not perfect '63 Split Bus much too cheaply at the end of last year. I like to think we were the last sane inmates of the Split Bus madhouse...but then again maybe we were the last suckers.:( |

| Still dodging the reasonable question. You and others say that the prices are too high. What would be the right price? |

| Right price for the 44k van?I'd say 25K. And generally i'm not a tightarss. But a big part of me says it's not really worth the 25. There's dozens of the buggers.Look around and see what you can get in the car market for 44K or even 25K |
| Posted by: 64rotbox - 09 November 2011 20:17:36 |
|---|
| From what I've gathered, £25k is the absolute maximum for a RHD Devon. I'd have said more like £16k to £20k, and even that feels like complete daylight robbery to me. But I'm still living in 1998, I suppose. It's been a rotten year so far, I can tell you. |

| Mrs Lifeinslowlane, George, I think you are correct. For 44K you can perhaps buy a house in Albania. In the UK there are many people who have money to spare and live a very comfortable life. I have even heard of some who have many holidays and criuse to the West Indies and tour the USA (don't they know there's a recession?) Busses are the cool accesory at the moment and some incredible prices are being realised at auction. Owners will see this and hope to do the same. It's probably only at auction that the true selling price is known, many of the private sales never attain the asking price. So I think many a try a high price first knowing that they can always come down if no 'mug' comes along. I am old enough to remember the price madness of the eighties and the way prices fell. It will be interesting to see if the same thing happens again but as yet there seems to be no apparent fall. I suppose the bottom line is that people ask the high prices because there are people out there who will buy. Love Rudy |

| I'm sure many people are buying into early VWs as an investment. The prices continue to spiral upwards, so better your cash in an old Beetle than the bank. Even with 1970s Beetles, they are certainly selling for more than a decade ago. Gone are the days of the ratty, 2 days MOT left '72 for sale at £150 to drive home. As for what an individual wants and gets for their car, I wouldn't consider selling our Old Blue at any price! Well everything does have its price I guess...
I don't consider that just because there are not many of a certain car that it is therefore worth big money. There are many vehicles types almost all gone and forgotten. Just a very few survive but they are valued at a few hundred pounds. With the VW scence things are unlike any other car marque. You can stick a VW badge on an old obscure continental car, say it has a few patented VW parts fitted at the factory, and bingo, a worthless heap is BIG money. Example, the Tempo Matador, nothing to do with Porsche, Hitler, Volkswagen, but hey, it has a VW engine (not even in the back). I want £35,000 please:wink: |

This hobby has moved on,people like youself spent many years complaining that Volkswagens were not recognised in the vintage car scene.Well this is the price of recognition.Time you caught up with the hobby. |

| to a certain extent I agree with old blue, just because it's rare doesn't automatically mean they're desirable and worth big money. I don't think many people like Paplers, they have an odd shape with the roof up. Without that desirability factor then even rare stuff shouldn't command silly money, I'd expect it to be quite a lot - but not €90k |

|---|
|
BEWARE FOR ALEXWOA IT'S A CROOK
I bought 1 item off Alexwoa and it was not a happy experience at all. The item went missing in the post and all requests for shipping tracking information and a requests for him to follow up on shipping from his end were ignored. As the item was bought off ebay I placed a dispute claim, which again got no response from Alexwoa. As there was no communication, ebay resolved the dispute in my favor and took the payment back off Alexwoa and returned it to me. I kept receiving very abusive emails about taking the money etc, but while the dispute resolution was in my favor I ignored him. Some months later the item did arrive, so I did the right thing and paid the money back. I could not say that Alexwoa is a crook, but I know that I will never choose to deal with him again. (especially at the prices that he asks) |

I give my full name , adress and zippcode After 4 weeks i send a email about my mirror no respons .After 5 emails i get a respons "Yes the mirror game back the adress you give it don't exist do you live under a bridge ,when i am interested in the mirror i must pay 1 more shipping cost ". So finaly after paying 1 more shipping cost you understand i never recieved the mirror. The mirror shows up every month on Ebay.On the last Bad Camberg he was on the list so i send him a email you can take the mirror with you and i can collect the mirror in BC.The mail i get from him "after storage the mirror for 2 years you must pay me 300 euro a year " I take my lost and the only thing i can do is warning people not to buy from him |

| Posted by: brille52 - 14 June 2012 21:31:35 |

| Maybe I can try to explain, why the seller thinks, he has THE BIGGEST TRESURE of the world !8) Here in Italy, till the end of the seventies ( or something round that ), when you sold a car and it went in another region ( from Lombardia to Alto Adige, for ex. ), you had to renew the number plate. As the years went on, the color of the plates did also change - so, the BEST you can get, is a car with a black and white plate and a very low number on it!! And this Oval has an original, black, low numberplate ! That`s it ! I must admit, this is very rare in Italy and hard to find! But this counts only, when the car remains in Italy !! Somebody might pay 5000 Euro more on a NORMAL VW-Ovali price, only because of this plates - on a NORMAL MARKET OVALI price !!! One of the sellers friends contacted me and asked, if I would be intersted in the car . No Thanks .......[-x 8) a |

| i think the crazy bus prices are when there selling for over $200.000 dollers,if you look at the price of a westy so42 in the states and then ship it to the uk,then strip it and restore it to that condition youl understand that the price is more than fair, people do say that an expensive price is crazy because they dont get it,and cant aford that price, unfortunetly the prices are just going to keep going up as these vehicles are more and more sought after.good if you own one just not great if you dont,if you look at beetle prices some split bugs and ovals are mad money but they cost that price to restore to those standards.why should vws not be in the same price bracket as the the other expensive cars. |

|
why should vws not be in the same price bracket as the the other expensive cars.
For me, the always increasing prices are killing the hobby - and I know a few others who have said the same thing. It's transferred from fun into serious investment, there's very few people who are able to lay down £40k on a hobby - something that will be used maybe a dozen days a year. Phils Van is lovely and I don't doubt one of the best, he's also a great guy so I hope he gets what he's asking. Personally, each high ££ or $$ car I see gets me more and more disinterested. It used to be good fun getting cars off farms or out of lockups for £50 each and having fun with them. Those days are well and truly gone, maybe I just need a break from it all for a while... |

|
Rob, I still reckon there are bargains out there to be had. You shouldn't lose faith in that- you just need to keep looking :) |

|
Perhaps someone should start a 'what a bargain' thread instead?
I could tell Rob all about my 500 quid and a case of beer Hebmüller, but I don´t want to depress him. Sure some of these cars seem over priced, but it´s not impossible to think we´ll be looking back one day at these "cheap bargains", and wishing we´d bought more of them. |

However a good complete 383 are getting hard to find. Even the usual US restorers, (Glenn Ring and Ed Fall) aren't offering them at the moment...you have to find them and send to them to restore. |

Actually, I suspect it's only this cheap because it's not been on the road since forever. |

|
IMHO That's a South of 20K car. https://www.bugnet.de/markt/marktbild.pl?181888 Not unsimilar.
I think that this green split is more desireable than the blue, and so is worth more, and as such is attractively priced. Original headliner, seats, correct engine etc - looks great. So many surviving splits and ovals are this colour, and I thought that green was supposed to be unlucky:?: |

| The Tempo commercials were fitted with VW engines, and in a remote way were the forerunner to the VW Type ll. The Tatra was the car that influenced Porsche when designing Hitler's People's Car. In particular, the big T87's smaller brother the very rare T97 which was flat-four rear engine air-cooled over swing axle, and considered by many the roots of the Volkswagen. See the thread here 'The Real Beetle Prototype', or 'Google' Tatra Beetle  |

| Hello Rob - Not yet got round to completing your survey : That's next on my agenda ! Although I've lost my licence I've not lost interest (or enthusiasm - only energy !). My grandson drew my attention to a smart looking, well-presented mid-1956 Oval with an interesting history on a site he visits, Cars and Classics.co.uk with a link to the dealer/vendor, Specialist Cars of Malton. Initial observations : Left Hand Drive : No radio : No pictures of Engine Bay : Strange for late 56 to have push-button (?) knob on left of dash and black painted straight gear lever ? Sadly too far away to pop round personally for closer scrutiny and decision justifying the dealers near £25,000 asking price which admittedly has to take account of the cost of any warranty/guarantee. Punditry fodder ? regards John aka Jollychuffy |
