I've been a regular viewer of these forums from well before sign up. It is a shame that some of the best contributors no longer, well, contribute, and things have gone a little quiet.
Last Triumph, Rattletrap, 48REME and 55KAB to name a few. Proof of their efforts are Last Triumph's excellent thread on his so original Oval's recommissioning, it has taken a whopping 110,000+ views, then there's the Rattletrap thread, that's taken an amazing 142,000+ views. These two examples are of informative and entertaining topics, which is probably why they are so popular.
It seems that the forums are becoming more like a personal messaging board, with members making post purely for the information of another member although there is a personal mail box to use.
Is it time for a poll to consider a section for post '67 Beetles and other later air-cooled VWs

This forum/website is aimed at a minority group so it's never going to win a popularity contest.
Some of the people you mention who no longer contribute no longer have their VWs, as far as I know and one has a new username.
I think you're missing the point a bit.
If people want to ask questions about Stock, Vintage VWs, they will probably get at least one opinion/answer here.

I agree things are quiet in here lately, I have scratched my head over it sometimes - thinking about things such as 'real names' etc. I do think that the weather has a lot to do with it, so many shows cancelled or postponed there's just not much going on.
People do come and go. LT's thread was fantastic, but as he's now sold the car he no longer posts here.
Post '67 Beetles? Kind of goes against the name of the site doesn't it?
My preference would be to stick to pre '67 VW's, but to include modified cars (although I suspect this would be a very unpopular change to many of the regulars). When I say modified, I'm not really talking about heavily modded cars like the VolksRods - more the early cars that have been lowered etc. Seems a shame to me that some nice early cars are 'excluded' from the site because the owner chose to lower their car...
Personally, I'm not into lowering cars anymore - they drive so much nicer at stock height than when they're lowered - but does that mean that the owners of lowered cars should be excluded from contributing to the site?
When the site started out, it included all types of pre '67. I even used to post photos of drag cars that were pre '67, but over time and after a few trips to Camberg and Hessisch the site developed into more of a stock theme (not specifically from me by the way, it was what people were asking me to do). Maybe the time has come to move back a little bit?
This photo was taken by Claus Missing at the VW Classic, it's a split window Beetle - but it's not stock so we can't talk about it here... :?

I must admit that one of the things that I like about this forum and what attracted me to it (other than ignorance on the forum about Ascorts) was that it is about stock cars. There just seems to be so much empasis on big engines and lowering in most magazines and forums, I find it very refreshing to find a forum such as this.
Although I may rave on about the Ascorts, trying to share information on the make, I have a love of stock early beetles. Maybe it is because I remember the 58 that my Dad had when I was a kid in the mid 60s, the new 64 that our next door neighbour bought, or the 64 that a good friend owned during my college years.
I agree that things seem quiet here lately which is a little dissapointing, and I would love others to be posting more about their cars and interesting facts.
I have been a little embarrased about my Ascort blog and posts, as although I am trying to keep my Ascorts as true to original as I can reasonably do, it is still not a stock VW and would only be of interest to a limited number of readers. I would post about VWs if I still had one, but I sold my stock 54 last year so that I could concentrate on my Ascort.

I'm one of those who stooped posting here, exactly because, I sold all my early Vw's and I now only have post'67 projects...
I do agree that this site is THE place to go for stock pre67 vw's, but don´t see any harm on having a separate Topic for modified pre67's and another also for later models .
@Rob, congrats and thank you for making this amazing site for all of us

Rob
I have voted that stock post 67 would be ok, even though my personal preference is for the older cars. I do have some reservations about the change though as I think that this site should be targetting just the purists.
One point of clarification that I would like to make is that I am voting for post 67 aircooled cars only, The watercooled cars should have no place in this forum (even though I do like them.)
Posted by: pre67vw - 14 June 2012 21:53:59
There's only a slim chance that post 67's will ever have a place here, so waterpumpers have zero chance.
Posted by: AW - 14 June 2012 22:12:24
I have voted 100% stock ( Hope that includes coachbuilt & old speed )

Posted by: lifeintheslowlane - 15 June 2012 08:40:44
Hmmm I voted "Absolutely not" as my preference but as a second best "Post 67 but not modified."
I think throwing it open to modified, (apart from Vintage Speed) would see the website being quickly overrun, alienating the core stock enthusiast.
Stock is in the minority in this hobby...throwing the website open would take away a last bastion of "mature discussion" about early aircooled VWs.

So in your opinion, it's better to have a quiet forum about stock than a busy forum that includes modified?
The term modified does tend to cover quite a wide range of VW's, what about including more of the resto-cal style of cars that are basically 100% stock from the floorpan up?

I wouldn't have a problem with old strip cars going in the Vintage speed section. Vintage speed generally tends to mean Okrasa's, Judsons etc. But it would be hard to argue that an old racecar from the 60's isn't a form of vintage speed.
Posted by: JD - 15 June 2012 09:50:57
I´d be happy with a separate post 67 section. Keeps it a "stock" forum, if not what some call truly vintage. All the restored VWs together, regardless of year. Going the other way with modified stuff would be poison for this place IMHO. The Resto Cal boys seem to be very knowledgeable about year on year changes and so on, (I think they´re a bigger bunch of buffers than anyone, though they´re far too cool admit it!) but they have their own forums.

i sit in both camps, as my 67 is stock and my 62 rag is a restocal, and im a member of the Rebel Alliance.
maybe it will change one day, who knows, but like JD said, alot of the restocal boys love an original and rare car, just slightly lower to the ground
So in your opinion, it's better to have a quiet forum about stock than a busy forum that includes modified?
I knew you were going to say that.
For the two forums I mod on The Samba the mix works very well. The Ghia Forum has a good bunch and nobody seems to tread on anyone's toes...probably takes less intervention to keep the house in order than it does here. It's just the people are used to the Stock only attitude here and there might be more friction generated by opening to all-comers.
I'd just hope it wouldn't attract a whole bunch of back-slappers and post whores that you get in other UK based VW websites. Nice one dude!
Just another idea is how about using the Samba idea of a "Reader's Rides" section open to all aircooled VWs. That generates a lot of visitors to The Samba who more often than not don't cross over into the "Technical Forums." Have a look at the Sticky "VW abortions, homemade bastards, post em....."...more than 4 million views.

Rob, I recon you should base your forum on whatever interests you.
When I started Bandwagen, my VW photography blog, the intension was to keep it about photography of stock, vintage VWs.
I soon realised that most, and some of the best photography of Volkswagens is of modified cars, especially where magazine shoots and professional photographers are involved. So it quickly expanded to include anything I felt was good photography.
I guess if there is a separate section for later/modified vehicles we don't HAVE to go there! :d

Absolute no to 'modded', the site should remain stock as the name on the tin says. Otherwise its great to include late 60s on original Beetles, though maybe to the end of German production - 1978.
As far as improving the site and making it more user-friendly, I'd suggest that the popular and informative threads such as I first mentioned, need to be gathered and allocated their own section. Really good threads just get 'lost', pushed to the back and forgotten as time goes by, missed by new members/lurkers who maybe see just the 'bitty' meaningless threads, not realising how good the forum can be.

I don't think the problem is stock or modified.
30 years ago, the pre 67 were hot because they were old. A 68 was too young.
Now 30 years later, the 68 still seems to be too young. And that's a shame.
Look at my blog (sorry in dutch language) and you can see that "young and old" can live together.

But the site is Pre 67 VW if you had a site Pre 45 VW would you let post 45 Splits in to the fold? There used to be a KDF club in France i think it was and that stated NO replicas. Its a hard one to solve Rob ( thats if it needs solving in the first place. ) One thing i would hate if it became a small Volks Zone :thumbdn: After all thats said its your site Rob and its down to you to follow which path you feel is right.

I'm a little surprised at the support for keeping it stock - even on facebook where I posted the same question hoping to get a few opinions of people who don't post here. It seems that quite a few people who are into lowered cars still like this place being stock.
My worry is always that it comes off as being a bit 'elitist' which then in turn puts people off joining in. We've always had a bit of an anti-lowering philosophy (a bit tongue in cheek from me as I've never owned a VW that hasn't been lowered  ) - I even banned GKL7 for a few hours once for posting a photo of a slammed bug
Maybe because of this, people have the opinion that they're not welcome here if they own a lowered car, which as far as I'm concerned couldn't be further from the truth. I don't think it would be a good path to go down to have lengthy threads on people's buildups of huge turbo charged engines, or threads on how to slam your VW - there's plenty of those elsewhere. But I would like a few people with early cars that are stock from the pan up to join in a bit more...
Posted by: JD - 15 June 2012 14:53:03
The stock only thing is the all that separates this place from other forums.
I know what you mean about being considered elitist though. Seems like prefering to keep a car stock immediately marks you down as some kind of snob in a lot of peoples books. No idea why.
The other thing that I can´t hear any more is certain segments of the lowered guys assuming that they´ll be causing "outrage" ( ) amongst "the purists"(Huh?) by lowering their car. The reality is more likely that most people just like seeing the cars in whatever form. I enjoy the variety at shows, but to me as field full of lowered cars is no more or less interesting than a field of stockers. Sorry, I´m rambling off topic here.

I'd like to see a section for stock post 67 cars, plus a section for stock water-coolers.
TBH, my 'stock' 67, isn't absolutely stock - it's been converted to 12v, has dual circuit brakes, passenger door mirror, and rear seat belts, so it's not as stock as it could be.
I even think a section for early modified cars would be good too, as attracting more members can only be a good thing. Robb's 62 ragtop is a good example.
It might actually work favourably, in so much as stock cars will get a greater exposure to more people  .
Interesting, some of the comments made on here about being perceived as elite, if you own a stocker. At some local shows, I feel the other way, that my car is the odd one out and I'm part of a dying breed...

I can understand your opinion, but (and in no disrespect to this forum), it's getting a bit quiet on here.
I think by being so specific, it's putting people off joining.
I cannot see how changing the rules slightly will affect things too much, and with more members, surely this will allow more people to appreciate/view stockers?
My initial interest in Beetles started with a like of modified cars, and I grew quickly to appreciate stockers from that... Now nothing beats a stocker IMO; find a few more like me, and the stock scene may grow............

It occurs to me that what VW's official stance was to modifications whilst any particular car (and in particular the Beetle)was in production is relevant to some parts of this discussion. Did they actively encourage (as Ford, Vauxhall/Opel, Fiat et al did), were they neutral, or were they anti?
Does anybody know or have a view?

As far as I know there were no VW 'approved' modified cars, they made it very difficult for Rometsch (for example) to buy Beetles to use as a base for their coachbuilt cars, Rometsch were buying cars through their employees at one point to get the cars they needed as VW wouldn't supply them direct. But by the 70s when the beach buggy craze was in full swing, VW were happy for Karmann to market their own beach buggy to try and cash in on it (not very successfully).
Ferdinand Porsche himself was a racer at heart and he didn't have any issues with modifying a Beetle to make it go faster, he had a cabrio with a supercharger on it and they also had a car with twin carbs on at some point as well. Let's face it, the first 356's were essentially modified VW's with a streamlined body over it all.
The Radclyffe Roadster was a modified Beetle...
Does that help at all? :? :d

VW actively fought every effort to modify their engines and vehicles. In the US they threatened to withdraw the franchise from any dealer offering non VW accessories. That includes Judson Superchargers and the whole EMPI Catalog. Joe Vittone had a long fight with VWoA and was told to remove the EMPI GTV Beetle from his showroom.
In the early '60s a group of after-market accessory manufacturers sued VWoA in an Anti-Trust lawsuit and won. What was in effect a restrictive practice lawsuit.
So the answer is...no VW did not assist anyone to modify their cars.

There have been a few mentions about old modified cars.
I personally feel that the site should be primarily about unmodified cars, but modifications which are period should be ok.
As has been stated, I think the Old Speed Okrasas and Judsons are fine. There should also be a place for period modified cars with items such as Petri wheels, steering locks, aftermarket sunvisors, clocks, gauges, roof racks, driving lights, swampy aircoolers etc. I would hope that period Pre67 coachbuilts can also remain to have a place on te forum.

We're talking about should we make the site more inclusive, not less!
'period correct' is what I like, I've never had a problem with that on the site.

I understand now the situation in America re mods. However was not VW involved in rally mods via the Austrian and East African distributors and maybe others ?
Certainly it had some marketing benefits in East Africa, my mother was one of many who bought a Beetle in East Africa on the back of rally success. Unfortunately she thought she could drive her car like a rally car and rolled it in a banana plantation. I am going to dare to tell the truth that she then bought a British car, again on the back of rally success, and did not roll that despite trying hard to do so!
I am coming from perhaps mods good enough for VW are good enough for this forum?
Some of the replies in this thread have demonstrated one thing to me. 90% of the posters here Just don't get it.
This is a site for Stock only pre'67 VW's,there isn't another and when you change it there won't be one at all.
What the hell, change it all and let's just become another wooley sheep in the flock.
You know why?? Because you don't deserve it.
Sorry mate but u are 1 of just 12-20 reg posters n that aint enouth i wood think to keep it alive an numbers may drop more if it aint opend to all stock bugs n buses.I get it as others do but your blind to it:roll:
Why is 67 so importent. The best lookers r the bugs made up to 1964 anyway as they have the org thick window pillars from the split days. 67 is same window as all 70s bodys n not so solid lookin so u may as well includ all stock bugs after 64:wink:

It just takes in the 6V era and post upright headlights.

Keep it as it is. If you include post 67 Vws it will soon attract the kind of muppets you get on VZi and as George stated it will just become another sheep in the flock.
Whilst I appreciate and respect the totally stock stance of the site, I think period modifications should be acceptable, if it was my forum it would be called pre 57 and I would ban anyone for life caught using 'txt spk' in their posts :d

If you do change it Rob, what are you gonna change the name to ?
I voted for including stock post 67, I doubt I would use that section of the forum much but I don't see any harm in including it and increasing the forum traffic for you.
Personally I would be just as happy with pre53vw

I voted for 100% stock, pre-67. That's what this site is (and always has been) about.
I love later stock cars, I've owned loads of nice ones but I think this site should stay pre-67 only.
Posted by: Chris - 17 June 2012 08:28:48
I can understand Rob's point of view. You put a lot of time and effort over a number of years into developing and building a website, all on a voluntary basis, and it never seems to grow in popularity when compared to other VW sites.
However, as most have already pointed out, being a stock, vintage site, the target audience is never going to be as big as the other sites. The decision is whether we want quality or quantity of threads. Personally, I'd prefer the 'quality' aspect of things, and as such voted to keep it stock.
As George has said, this is what makes this site stand out from the crowd. Otherwise you'll have people posting up pictures of their VW tattoos [-x
Maybe something to discuss next weekend over a few beers :d

I have voted that stock post 67 would be ok, even though my personal preference is for the older cars. I do have some reservations about the change though as I think that this site should be targetting just the purists.
One point of clarification that I would like to make is that I am voting for post 67 aircooled cars only, The watercooled cars should have no place in this forum (even though I do like them.)
Rob
I have been reading comments on this topic with interest. The more I consider things I wish I had voted differently.
If there is any chance of changing my vote, I would like it changed to period correct Pre 67 cars.

Busiest thread in a while! lol
Only reason I don't see this site getting any busier is to a new comer it appears very hostile and elitist. Nothing to do with the content!

It specialises in the rarer car Si...it's bound to seem elitist to someone who doesn't own one.
If they do own one all they have to do to join the clique is to show a genuine interest and talk sense...not too hard.

The trouble is that a lot of the stock/vintage people don't post here either... :(

If it's not the content that comes across as elitist, what is it?
Posted by: Chris - 17 June 2012 11:36:26
The easiest way to find out why people no longer post is to ask them. I'm an administrator on a mountain biking website, and have the facility to 'e-mail all members'. Why not do this asking why they don't post anymore or as much. Admittedly you may only get a small percentage that reply, but at least it should give you a starting point on why the post count is not as high as you'd like.
It would be helpful too if people would explain their statements. If someone thinks the site is 'elitist', then what gives that impression ? This is not meant as a criticism of anyone's post, just may help the site break down the 'barriers' that people think exist.
I don't see the forum being 'elitist' myself, except where people try and post threads on topics other than pre 67 cars, then they are 'put in their place'.
As I said earlier, it's a target audience out there for stock pre 67 cars, just look at the membership of the Historic Club, not as high as other clubs because the target audience is lower. Why not advertise this site more at shows such as Stanford Hall and Lavenham ?
I for one would like to see more traffic on this site, but don't want to compromise the quality of the topics to get that traffic.

I'd say GKL7's hair was too long and I've never seen him in a tie or wearing trousers other than jeans, so you couldn't be further from the truth really...
txt speak is a personal irritation of many of the 'older' generation, myself included. There are plenty of free spell checkers you can use so there's really no excuse for it. Even when I send texts on my mobile, I make sure it's spelt correctly and has punctuation... But that's an age thing I know.
I don't remember Ovaltine typing in text speak, and he posted from the same IP as you - and hasn't logged in since you signup up... So if you are him then it's probably time to stop...

OK, so the poll is over, feedback has been received both here and on the facebook page - so here's what I've decided.
1) I'm not going to create a post '67 section. The name of the site is pre67vw and was started in order to cater to the 6v sloping headlight models, I just don't see how it can be pre67vw but also include super beetles and bay window buses.
2) I'm not going to create a modified section, feedback from most people was to keep it stock. However... my personal view is that it should be acceptable to post anything about a pre '67 car if the topic is relevant - ie, if the owner has a lowered car but wants to know what is correct for some other aspect of it, then the forum should aim to be as helpful as possible. If someone wants to know how to do a roof chop on their split, then this is still not the right place to ask.
3) Anything period correct is OK. The site has always had a little place for Okrasa engines and other old-speed equipment etc. Or coachbuilt cars made back in the day. If it happened before 1967 then it's fine by me to post it on here.
Thanks for all the input, I'm going to lock the thread now because I don't see any value in further comments. One thing I would say is that the success/failure of the forum is not down to me, it's down to all of you that post. Know body knows how long pre67vw will be around, it's not owned by some big publishing company that will just keep it running while people come and go - if interest in the forum dies out then I'll remove it. So if you want it to stay around then it's up to you to get involved and keep it busy.
Thanks!
