Somebody offered me a engine block nr. 10206385, at the ouyside it looks very good! But it is not turning around anymore! The seller says its not turning anymore because the engine block is laying around in his (heated) garage for several decades! I would like to know if the block can be used in a split and what’s the price I can offer the man! ET ps: the seller also tells me its a 1950 block!!!

The engine 1 - 0206385 was built in mai 1950 The question if you can use it - and how much you shold pay is always a question of the real condtion.

OK but is 500€ for a not turning engine block too much than? Its only the block, plating and everyhing else is not there! All the intakes are closed so nothing could fall in!! Or is that a fair price? It can be overhauled! ET

I bought a complete engine ready to bolt on and run for £150 (about 225Euro i think?) its an early 50's 36hp so not as sought after as the 50 24hp your looking at. But just goes to show you dont have to pay a fortune. a few correct items added and it wont look too disimilar to a 24hp anyway (see picture). I was offered a febuary 1949 block which had been opened and checked buy a specialist, it was fine even the bearings were not even bad. The guy wanted 400Euros. So I guess 500 is ok providing you know your not buying a piece of scrap. Someone on the Samba (who i must say knows his stuff) told me i need to budjet 10K for a correct 49 engine. That seems crazy to me, but if you are planning on building up the 50 block things could soon add up? I suppose it depends on what you plan to get from the engine, is it simply to get the car moving, for correctness, or you fancy building one? One thing you may wish to try is searching old German fire stations, they often have early engines laying around that were used for pumping water, so low hours healthy (well maintained) engines, you just need to add top parts to run the car. Also many of these engines if not all never were given a number, so you could give it your own  hope i have been of some help?
