These are a bit of an unknown territory to me being a Standard model Split-window collector – cable brake cars. I've now added a Deluxe model Split-window to my collection  It has stood over 12 years and the brakes are completely non-existent, all hydraulic fluid gone. Where's the best place to start? Hoses, pipes etc all seem okay. I've put brake fluid into the reservoir and pumped the pedal but the fluid does not go down into the system :? Presumably I need to open a connection at a wheel cylinder to let the air escape and allow the fluid in :?: I know that once the fluid goes through I'm going to have to bleed the whole system to remove all the air. Someone out there been in this situation :?:

Posted by: 54 Gertie - 11 May 2009 13:35:29
I assume you have the bleed screw loosened at the corner that you are working on?

Posted by: Standard split - 11 May 2009 13:46:28
Not down that far yet Gertie  Got to get the juice into and through the master cylinder  But maybe I just need to open the system at any any of the wheel cylinders to get the fluid running, and just repeat the same for the other three :o I'll then find out where all the jammed cylinders, split hoses and rotting seals are :? None of this with Standards 8)

Otherwise where can the fluid go?

If I were you I'd consider replacing/rebuilding the master cylinder and wheel cylinders. The rubber in these can perish over time and with single circuit brakes if you have one leak anywhere then you lose all your brakes  Any photos? 8)

Having said that my ratty '58 has hydraulics and with just a rare top-up, I've not touched them for years and they're fine  Rather have full cables though 8) Have to get some plates before the photos – but it is shiny. Now, where's the fine grade wet 'n dry paper:evil:

Posted by: Sunroof53 - 11 May 2009 15:53:28
From experience i would start by taking the master cylinder out and remove the pistons for cleaning or just buy a new one if there is any rust inside. The fact it had no fluid in it means there will be rust formed in the system. At the very least change all the flexible hoses and either change or strip down and check all the wheel cylinder rubbers .Cylinders are so cheap for later cars i personally dont think it makes senses to rebuild them.Check the shoes also for contamination .It may seem like a lot of work but i gaurentee if you dont go through it all it will cost you later in one way or another. Mike

If it has been many years as you suggest... I would: 1- open up all the wheel cylinders and strip them down to nothing... remove everything 2- if they don't have any corrosion in the cylinder chamber then blast all the crap off of them and paint them black if you like. (don't get any paint where the brake fluid will live) (if they are corroded... even a little... then throw them in the trash buy new ones) 3-if they are not corroded then hone them with a special little honing tool you put on your electric drill. 4- install rebuild kit bits and put them back together 5-Clean up the adjusting stars with a wire wheel... grease them with some white grease before re-installing. 6-Replace ALL flexible lines 7- If there is ANY rust in any of the hard lines I would replace them too. I have had "blowouts" of hard lines twice (usually in the long line that goes front to rear) 8- buy the little rubber caps that go on the bleeding valve tips... to keep out crud and water... manually bend the little keepers that hold the stars back where they are supposed to be... so that they actually hold the stars rather than let them spin. Read the manual on bleeding brakes.... you'll need a friend to help. 1234 applies to master too... The little hone tool is usually available at most auto parts places.

That's thorough overrestored :!: All this hydraulic stuff certainly makes me pleased that most of my VWs are Standard cable brake cars  Hydraulic for daily drivers – cable for collectors, occasional use. My 1949 split has stood for best part of 23 years – the cable brakes work fine 8)
Thanks – I do like the placed on digits, nice classic 3D look
I like those as well but I think you'll find that you will get plastic numbers on a plastic back. This can look a bit odd on a well aged old classic! I have these on my 63 and I am planning on buying the metal plate for the pressed variety, without the number spressed in and putting my raised lettering on that! Sounds odd but it should work! :?

One thing that looks really bad – it's a post 1972 car with black plates, it's illegal anyway so the owners must swap them with yellow plates for the MOT test :? Interesting to note that the tax exempt last year and the black number plate last year is the same – 1972. Can't believe this government has planned it that way
One thing that looks really bad – it's a post 1972 car with black plates, it's illegal anyway so the owners must swap them with yellow plates for the MOT test :?
I personally prefer the yellow backed, but still riased letter number plates on 70s (post 72 ish) cars. They are more modern in style anyway so there is no pon=int pretending that it is a more "vintage" vehicle. However im sure that most MOT centre will just see it as an "old" car and not worry about the changes in number plates! Can the police cameras (not speed cameras the type that searches for insureence etc in the car) red the early pressed number plates? I would imagine it would have problems figuring out what it says as they would have been programmed to read the modern style plates? :? Oh well! Dont intend on driving illegally anyway!
See an 02 new mini with black plates recently – for sure an MOT plate swap  The new century style registrations look really wrong on a vintage plate :x
Oh yes when it is very clearly a modern car (albeit a retro impersonation) then im sure an MOT inspector would spot it but when it is the difference between an early and a late bay window camper, I think not!
Oh yes when it is very clearly a modern car (albeit a retro impersonation) then im sure an MOT inspector would spot it but when it is the difference between an early and a late bay window camper, I think not!
I think it depends on the MOT station. If they think you're taking the P, maybe a fail will result. If a retest fee is possible they may fail for the extra revenue. A 1974 Beetle may not look too odd with the black plates, but they are entitled to refuse a pass certificate as it's still illegal
it's still illegal
Im not saying it isnt but im saying that on "older" vehicles that should not have them some MOT testers may not notice/care! And im not making a case for thosw ho do run them illegally becasue it is, after all, illegal! Im just saying that they probably get away with it at MOTs.

It's also great that in this country there is such a variety of plate styles available for vintage cars. In Germany, I've seen a few freshly-restored splits and ovals with old style German plates like the ones on these period photo cars. I asked everywhere, even on the German forum where one could get these made but nobody ever bothered replying.

She's not at all shiny - fantastic patina with just about all original (and a little moth-eaten) factory paint on the exterior, and yes low, low miles, less than 18K in fact (25,000 kms). I don't beleive the engine has ever been out - really  I know she's mine ( and I don't normally refer to an inanimate object as 'she'), but the '49 is probably the finest old Beetle I can expect to own in my life. The smell inside is unreal, a picture cannot show this  I've had an enormous amount of Beetles over the years I've had this passion for the things, most have come and gone while the '49 has continued to live with me over 24 years, seeing most the others come and go 8) I UK registered her back in 1985, the DVLA must have loved her too, they blessed her with the registration YSV 1, (Yea Super Volkswagen 1), it didn't cost me a penny and even then a dealer offered me good money for this No1 plate, which of course stays with the car as the original UK registration. This alone is an indication of the good charmer this little car has :d An even more interesting tale in the '49 and I history is that I turned-down the purchase of a 1939 Beetle back in 1985 – they were both available (as is Sod's law) at the same time and not being fantastically rich I could only have one car, and the '49 won, it was fantastically original and the '39 wasn't    I more recently aspired to owning my other dream car, a fantastic and mad-looking 1937 Tatra T87 (rear-engined air-cooled V8 with a big fin on its back and no rear window), but if push came to shove, with a difficult situation the '49 would still be with me after the Tatra and everything else has gone  After spending Sunday messing around with the hydraulic brakes on my rest-free 1972 Beetle – I love the '49 even more with her full cable brake set-up. A Deluxe with cable brakes, how unusual is that 8) 8) 8)
