According to the dvla, BCD 822B is still registered but last taxed in '86 so might be hidden away sonewhere. The other two don't show up. :?

Posted by: 55Kab - 26 July 2009 13:24:32
Well XXL 34 survived up until 1989 as I shot it at VW Action. However, it's not listed on the DLVA website so it doesn't look good. The tax on BCD 822B expired on 1/2/86 so doesn't look got for that one also. No SORN declared. OEL 134 has been seen about and was taxed until 1/9/2008 so I'm sure that one is still with us.

Thats good news .OEL looked to be a very nice car.Shame no one has a recent photo.I have some more old scans somewhere of other cars. Not sure what to do with them though .Maybe we need a lost and found sticky? These pics are apalling but i have a feeling LUS belongs to Chris clarke of peppercorn.Interesting car for me as it is a 53 sunroof.i would be interested in the chassis # of this car to see if it is earlier than my own. 969AYU (Ghia) got written off years ago. Didn't it belong to the editor of Safer Motoring?

Posted by: Rich Oakley - 26 July 2009 19:29:43
720ADM and GJF777D were no longer registered with the DVLC in 1983, so most likely scrapped. I think Chris Clarke still owns LUS805

Keith Vipond owns a blue 1955 standard. I should know the reg munber but have forgotten it  It's at all the shows, so should be well known. NMP23 was sold to Keith a number of years ago. I think I've got a couple of pictures of it at home. I'll have a root around tonight. It's currently stripped to it's shell and all the bits are in boxes.

Keith Vipond's 1955 Standard is XHA 20 and definately isn't lost. His restoration of 23 NMP is progressing and he sourced several missing parts for it in H O this year. The Pastel Green zwitter is SSU 687 and at various times has been owned by George, Charles Oldroyd and me. Yes it's currently in North Wales and owned by Gwyn Jones. Once again, not lost.
I owned it pre restoration. It was as solid as a rock. Nowadays i don't think it would have been restored, just put back on the road.
Think you're right. Reason I ask is I helped a member of the HVWOC pick up a red oxide primed split shell and some parts from a guy near Grimsby some years ago and I'm sure that car was in his garage so would that have been pre or post your ownership? He also had a sunroof split which needed restoring. Got some pics somewhere, I'll dig 'em out if you'd like to see.

Here's another 'Lost' oval. I found this about 11 years ago after hearing about it from a friend who went to see a landrover in the same field. Sorry for the quality of the pics, but remember digital cameras were new then  It's a RHD but I cannot tell what year it is. But looking at the steering wheel in the third picture, it looks like a standard but it's clearly got chrome trim. Ben (64Rotbox) should have some better quality pictures on file as I took him to get some shots of it. Anyway, as for as I know it's still there to this day  Maybe Ben will post some more pics. Erm... I can't remember but my shots of that might be on slides, and christ knows where they might have gone (I destroyed pretty much everything to do with my brief period in the 'publishing business' in a big therapeutic type exercise/voodoo ritual involving a doll which looked like... er well, let's not go there) but I might still have them knocking about in a forgotten box. I'll have a look. The car (or what remains of it) was still there a couple of years ago. I saw the bloke in question on the other side of Mold, pedaling towards Chester, so I figured it'd be safe to go for a quick nose. I didn't hang about, mind.

I tried zooming in on the heater outlets but I think that bottom 10 inches have rather returned to earth and anything else that may date it is too fuzzy or not in view. What ever it is, it is worth a look back, and grab us some numbers while your there! It looks to have been there for a century so it will probably still have its crash box. Maybe another one for the list Malc? 8)

There's probably some pattern to the bloke's movements, but I've not got time to stake the place out these days... However if I do happen to get a chance again, I might go for a look. I certainly don't remember any number plates anywhere, the decklid was obviously pinched long, long ago.

So found my pics of XXL 34. Taken at Action in 1988, she looked pretty good. In the original scan I could see number of patches attached to the headliner just below the rear window. You can just make them out in the photo below. As a member of the caravan club this car must have got about. Surely it must still be with us in some guise?
Was that that scrapyard out towards Alton? That place was awesome!
Blimey James were you stalking me? Indeed it was, just south of Four Marks. It was one of those "old" style yards that kept vehicles forever. I took some nice parts off of early VW's in there. During my visits I remember a 56, 58, 63, 65 Bug's and a handful of split screen vans. I recall an early Fastback too...D reg? I had a quick look on Google Earth for the place and found it although by the looks of it most of the yard has been cleared. When did you visit, and how did you find it?

My pal found a radio blanking plate on a split bus that he needed and I bagged a 30hp fanshroud (they were all the go in them days!). I remember climbing inside an FB Victor through the missing windscreen (it was buried) and getting as far as the back seat before realising that there was a wasps nest in the car as it quickly filled with peed off wasps! You never saw me move so fast!! Remember the sixties Thunderbird? I was back there years later and it had almost all been cleared. Tragic!

I don't know what it was but on my visits there was always something not quite right about the place. I never met anyone else and there was always an eerie silence to it. In fact thinking about it, it was as if the cars were alive and talking to one another, whispering stop him, stop him! It almost felt wrong talking parts off the cars and I always had the feeling someone was watching you or that some kind of weirdo was about to step out in front of you Texas chainsaw massacre style!!!  I took some more photos of the VW's there, I'll dig them out.

A friend of mine used to live in Newton Abbott at the time and the car was advertised in the local paper. He phoned me to tell me about it, so I drove down from the West Midlands the very same day to view it. I seem to recall that it was in really good condition, but the owner just wanted too much money for it. Can't remember how much he wanted, but he just wouldn't budge on the price so I had to walk away.

One of my best finds was this 57 Oval. Originally Horizon Blue I sold it after a clean up to Peter Roberts of Funkenblitz. Don't know what happened to the car but strangely whilst surfing regtransfers last year soon after buying the cabrio I found the number VGY 77 for sale. I bought it and have it on retention. However besides a UK RHD 60 cabrio my best find was this place: Notice the bus in the background (and my low milage unmodified! Campaign Mk.1 GTI  ) Well I didn't appreciate it at the time as Beetle's were my thing but that bus was a seriously old UK RHD machine: However the real star was in the barn you can see behind the 63 sunroof: TLY 47, a 51 standard. At the time the car was not for sale and I left the air-cooled VW scene and forgot about it. If however you'd like to know if it's still there, you'll have to ask Professor Oakley!

Often wondered what happened to these two: I photographed LYH 691P at Bug Jam in 88. It's RHD so I wonder if it was original and a UK car? According to the DVLA it was a 66 and the tax ran out just 2 years later in August 1990: BKN 100C was a UK RHD car I used to see a lot locally (think it lived near Southampton). I took these photos in 86 or 87. I know it was later Cal-Looked and repainted blue. Don't know where it is now but it was taxed up until July 2007 so perhaps it's lurking in a garage or on someone's driveway somewhere:
Did you take any pics?
I had quite a lot of pics from this place back in the late 90s on my PC. Unfortunately, I lost them all in a hard-drive failure. I have posted this on another thread a long while ago but i its an interesting car for the sticky.I have a feeling this car survives with a different registration and minus all the good bits as i remember a fire engine red sunroof car coming up on vzi some years back. That of course could apply to a lot of cars as many old cars lost there original registration to get the maximum price for it.The original reg for my own car is on a Subaru

He owns at least five pristene Split Bugs, four Hebmullers, three split-dash Karmann Kabs and this is a VERY small part of his collection. As far as I'm aware, they never get driven on the road.

Erm, I'm not quite that dense. I meant the user names in that order sort of put things in... ooh, never mind. You're right on the tight bit, though. The original Mr. Thrifty. You could no more get a Visa card between the cheeks of my bottom that you could get it out of my coat pocket.

Not much. He seems to find working and having a family and stuff more important that staring at the internet all day. Strange chap. All his cars are fat strutters, anyway... Anyway, shall we have some more photos instead of all this idle chit-chat? Specifically Dafydd Hughes' photos of the James residence. ^^^^ tks for posting Ben. Some really interesting and sad photos there. Do you have any idea when they were taken or what happened to the yard? Was anything saved? I guess the business was started pre the So-End Look explosion in the mid 80's so it was just a yard full of old VW's but once the UK entered into full on Cal-Look mode surely people was making offer's for the cars all the time. I couldn't help myself but I looked on Google Earth (fantastic tool) and found the site but alas from 130,000ft zoomed in and no sign of Beetle's!

Mid '80s, I think the snaps were taken, I'll have to check with DH. There'd been VWs there for many years before it all got trendy, unfortunately after a newspaper article (concerning the council's attempts to clear the place out) was printed in VWM, the place was deluged with people after bits for nothing, and I think the attitude of the owners changed somewhat. People were making daft offers for parts/cars, and that got their backs up a bit. There was a fair bit of thieving as well, I was told. I only went the once on the premise of needing a fusebox, and purposely didn't take photos or be a nuisance, so I seemed to get on OK with them (Des and his son, I think it was). The lot was cleared in the mid '90s, I seem to remember. I've no idea if anything got out 'alive', but most of it was beyond saving (for then, anyway... these days things would be very different). I never found those two Splits parked at the side of the road near Aberystwyth, either.

The place came to my attention as a result of a news article in the Western Mail and my Dad drove me up there one sunny weekend just to see the place out of interest; it had to have been the summer of '84 as I had yet to learn to drive! As I wasn't into VW's at all at that stage (neither was my Dad) Des James was fairly welcoming as it was obvious we didn't want anything from him.....but I do remember him mentioning that he had begun to have a lot of parts pilfered from his vehicles as a result of his new found 'fame'..... Looking at those 'photos I wish I'd had a much better look at the time , but I was only a kid, and not really into those funny cars with the engine in the back......

That was my ad for 54CLD! I sold the car and it changed hands several time before being finished. It was exhibited at the Volksworld show a while back and managed to have a chat with the owner to tell him some of it's history. It's now black but still modified as far as I know. :d Another thread about this car I wonder if there's a way for Rob to retrieve the pictures from the ad here on Pre67?
We need a contact on the "inside" at the DVLA (step forward Robin Allen?). But I hear even the Police have to ensure they have supporting data when asking about a car's details.....
In the Netherlands you can pay the RDW (DVLA) and then they send your request to the registered owner. It is up to him/her to reply to the request. I was contacted once in this way because the new owners of a farm where I had a Beetle stored wanted to track me down. Luckily they could through Big Brother otherwise the Beetle might have been scrapped. . . Did you check with the DVLA is they provide such a service? Hanno

Posted by: VW Stan - 03 November 2009 23:10:02
The DVLA will only release information about the current registered keeper if you have a legitimate reason such as the vehicle has been involved in an accident or illegally parked. https://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/data.aspx
Hello there! That'll be me who took the photo of OSK722 in 2000. I was on my way up the A19 to see my girlfriend on a Friday afternoon and stopped off at a VW specialist/workshop in Thirsk, just off the A19 (Adrian's VWs or something like that). I was after some camper parts for a camper I was restoring. The workshop was closed, but standing outside was OSK722 with the For Sale sign in the window. I remember thinking- very nice, fairly original car- shame it's lost it's original number plate. Sorry, but that's all I know. I think I took another couple of pics, so I will try and dig them out for you. Can you please post some pics of the car as it is now.

Posted by: bennetj - 05 March 2010 11:45:12
ye i sure can, not for a couple of weeks though my laptop is being repaired. i am fairly new to all this, how do you no its not the origianl numberplate?

Posted by: 55Kab - 05 March 2010 15:44:09
how do you no its not the origianl numberplate?
Because 'OSK' is a typical non age related sequence of letters issued by the DVLA when a car is reregistered following the sale of the original plate. Could also have been issued if the original number was lost if the then owner didn't register it again at the time the DLVA records were computerised. Applying to the DVLA for the car's records will tell you what the original number was and when/why is was given its current number.

Posted by: Sunroof53 - 06 March 2010 23:06:42
Just for idle interest the prefixes SU, SV, SK, DS,YJ and VS are also age related.

Posted by: bennetj - 09 March 2010 09:58:13
ok wicked so how do i apply for the records do i just email the dvla?

Posted by: 55Kab - 09 March 2010 11:52:37
so how do i apply for the records do i just email the dvla?
 I wish. You need to download a form from their website (or pick up from a Post Office). I think the form is a V888. You'll need to give the reason you want the info and send a cheque for £5.

Peter Nielsen in Denmark was looking primarily for info on the sunvisor on this Oval SNJ 888. It's pictured here in one of the early '90s Vintage editions of Volksworld. Is the car still on the show scene with the sunvisor, it's a rare visor as it fits the profile of the windscreen trim.
I asked him that when I saw him earlier in the year. He thought it got scrapped...:(
Hi guys, I came across this forum having Googled VGY 77. My father bought VGY 77 in about 1962 when I was about 5 years old with something like 50K miles on the clock (the beetle, not me). I can still remember driving home through Winchester in the car the day we bought it. (We had traded in our previous car, a Triumph Mayflower, reg no. RXY 943). We took the car to 150K with very few problems and then traded it in at Mr Richards' garage in Chesil Street, Winchester, for a new Renault 10, Reg HCR 788D, so that would have been in 1966. I have posted a photo of me in VGY 77 taken in about 1962. All the best!
