| Over the last few weeks I have received emails from about 4 Lawrence Rometsch owners. Each of them has wanted information on their cars which I don't keep track of. I only follow the Beeskow cars. There is a big need to form a registry for the Lawrence cars. I am suggesting that this forum could be a great place for these owners to contact each other. SO... If you are an owner of a Lawrence bodied Rometsch... please reply to this forum so other lawrence guys can find you. I am trying to contact Phil Leadley.. he and his wife Mary Beth (now deceased) used to keep the original Rometsch Registry. When I get this info I will have Oystein Asphell add this Lawrence info into our existing Beeskow registry. Until then perhaps it is best to start a new registry here. Eric Meyer |

| Hello Erik, i do not think you will have sucsess at Phil Leadly. When Guido van Zundert was friend with Gabriel Sancess ( I think this is how he was written ) they ür Gabrial were at Phils house. Gabriel told me that he got the list. He went to some of the adresses from the list ( registy ) and that is were and how he found some cars ( the Lawrence from Guido from Holland and the car Randy can buy ) As i know Gabriel has the list now Bye Christian |

| I can try to contact Gabriel, or at least his wife to see if he has this information anywhere. A local investor bought the car he had remaining and I am overseeing the restoration. It should be completed soon...hopefully by the VW Classic in June. |

Eric Meyer
Certainly a great initiative Eric - it is about time somebody pulls together for the sake of the late models as well. For the record - the official Rometsch Beeskow Registry now counts a total of 32 confirmed 1951-1957 Rometsch Beeskow cars in the world at this moment. We would love to include "activists" and details regarding the Lawrence models as well. My guess is there are more than 32 of such. And how about the taxis? |

| :p Mark and Ray did an outstanding job on the Rometsch. These cars are one of the most difficult to restore and the decision has to be made at some point to either totally restore or stabilized it in an unrestored condition. The later choice was not an option if I remember correctly what the car looked like before. Will the Rometsch be at the Kelly Park Show next month? R. Dean |

| The picture on top was made at Peter Frieds shop near Ludwigshafen. The car is the blue-blue one which was restored by the Grundmanns. The red-black body was shot in Hessisch Oldendorf. The car is actually owned by the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg. The pricture of the crashed Rometsch was mad in Guido's shop in Netherlands. The car still exist there, but is actually cuttet in pieces. The orange one was restaured Rampsberger and is the black one who is known by the visitors of Bad Camberg or Hessisch Oldendorf in the past years. It is now a part of a very interesting collection close to Bremen / Germany. The silver one was for sale in Bonn area 15 years ago. It is owned by a Rometsch-collector from Solingen. A few month ago, an unknown Lawerence with boynumber 534 was found in switzerland. It was stocked in an old factory and hidden unter a few dozends of washingmachines (!). |
Bjoern, thank for your comments on the Lawrences cars. Do you have pictures of the 534 car. I know Guido car is body 558, it is now in hands of a Dutch collector that own two lawrences. He also has a coupe. I hope to see both his car somewere in the next few weeks. You write that the orange is now Black and was shown of the big european vintage meetings. Than it must be the black car wih licence plate D EZ58H, is that correct? Do you happened to know the number of this car? I really like the silver one. You write that is is owned by a Rometsch collector, what other Rometsches does this person has? You can also PM me, if you don't want certain information on the internet. My goal however is to add the lawrences to the Rometsch registry (as soon as this is on-line again) therefor I really like to know the bodynumbers of the cars. Regards Patrick |

| The red and black coupe, san's chassis sat in my back yard for 20 yrs. We rescued the car in about 1980, used it as a parts donor till approx. 2002. I still have the b pillar badges as momento's. The yellow doors and deck lid in the background came from a fellow in Desconso, Ca. who also had a 58 coupe, same color. We bought his spares, but had to pass on the coupe. In the 70's these cars had very low value, and were beyond the skill level of most VW people. Prior to our cabrio, few people had completed a restoration, much less a sale to establish a benchmark value. The degree of difficulty still remains high as well as resto costs. At least now the cars have accepted values, in 1978 we spent $10K + on a car few had even seen. Countless times I was asked " whats it worth?" I have no idea. Hell! we didn't know what the car was supposed to look like! We restored it from 1 picture! Now thanks to the hard work of many people, you can restore a Rometsch correctly and share it with other car lovers. Because in the end thats all that really matters, dollars or euro's can't buy what you receive when you show (share) your car. Please forgive my passion, I (we) put heart and soul into promoting Rometsch cars, to the point of burnout. At least a hundred car show and Concour events, countless magazine shoots, books, TV interviews, and correspondence, took a toll. After 1996 I had to quit, I don't remember what I did with the records from the Registry (ask the Grundmanns?) Years of depression and a heart attack reek havoc on ones memory, now 13 yrs. later I can talk about it. The photos of the car with the VW NUT plates, our car at a VWVCC meet at Don Burns VW dealer in Garden Grove Ca. circa 1976. Note the ghia rear bumper, it took me three years to find a replacement. We sold our cabrio in 94 to Dr. Mac Jones of Somerville, Tenn. The black cabrio with the porsche grille could be the same car years later? I miss my friend Willie Lottermann. |

| I tried to get an overview of the current remaining Rometsch Lawrences. If you have any information about other rometsches or information about the bodynumber or current owner or locations of rometsches shown here, please let me know (private message). Please NO owner names here publicly on the forum. For the Lawrence there no more than 85 build!. It seems that there are 3 different body styles. · Round taillights with the curve on the body · Rectangular taillight with or without the curved in the body · Different grill on front There is no definitive bodynumber when these changes happened. At least all the round taillight cars are curved style. For the rest it looks like the customer could specify if he wanted a curved or a smooth style body. I found 26 different lawrences that survived. Here are the pictures of the cars I have find. If anybody has info on other cars, please let me know The 1st style: (round taillights with the curve in the body) 1: Body 515, 1957 Black Coupe located in Germany. This is the oldest Rometsch lawrence known. | The car in question may have been 1 of two belonging to dennis linkletter, grandson of american tv personality Art Linkletter (unconfirmed). He told me he was doing a cal look lawrence, but I never saw it. I did end up with the red/black coupe which he abandoned at a shop in Costa Mesa, Ca. Dennis was not very co-operative regarding his cars, last I heard he was working in Italy as a male model. |

| Patrick, this the story of one that got away. Mid 80's, we followed a tip on a Rometsch located at a concrete company in Westminster, Ca. Sure enough inside a tin storage shed was an original 61 coupe. Medium green metallic in color with the delicate trim on the nose of the car. I remember the car as being original and complete. It was surrounded by other cars, but we still got a couple of photos anyway. When we processed the film, our pics didn't turn out, big mistake. The car was gone when we returned, and the person who claimed to be the owner refused to talk about it, or what happened to it. C'est la vie |

| It has been a year since my last post. Let's have an update of what happened in the last year. The registry is now on 30 cars. From 28 cars I have pictures and 2 other are known to exist, but unfortunately no pictures yet. The cars that changed owner in the last year: 1) I bought car nr 561. Will start the resto next year. 2) Car 517 was tracked in the US by Eric and was bought by Rene van Hulzen from Germany. Rene started the resto immediately, see: https://www.vw-karmann-ghia.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=3293 3) Car nr 515 was sold an bought by Christian Grundmann together with Rene van Hulzen. Christian kept the body and most of the bodyparts went to Rene to use on his car. 4) Car nr 555 (the ratlook rometsch) was part of a trade between Kieft and klok and another VW repair shop here in the Netherlands. Not much later the car was traded again and is now being restored. The car will not go back to original, it will stay a racer. Here is a new overview of all the existing Rometsch Lawrence cars |

| It's not like this one is impossible to find. If I'm not mistaken, there is actually one on eBay right now. I already have several Rometsch brochures. With a little bit of patience, this one will also be added to my collection :d |

| I am also following E-bay, but haven't seen this one recently. there is this one: https://cgi.ebay.nl/1961-Rometsch-VW-Coupe-Cabriolet-Prospekt-catalog-/250724679470 And , I have a spare of the brochure shown at the top. (but I know you already have this one, as I used your picture) But, I don't know the other brochure. Can you scan it for me???? I thought it was the one oval56 was selling but I was wrong. The prices of these are too high.
This auction could be for a reproduction catalog. I'm not sure. In order to verify... you need to see the back cover... on the bottom of the repro it will say "VVWCA-T. Shuler-1988" The repro still has value... just not the same as an original. The original version of this 1952 brochure looks just the same... but features a 1952 split windshield Beeskow in the photos. The version in this ebay auction is called a 1952 catalog... but features a curved windshield car. I have an original 1952 version of this catalog... featuring photos of a split window car... and I also have one that looks just like the image in this auction... printed by Terry Shuler in 1988. I don't have an original curved window catalog in this size... so I can't speak from total authority on this auction without seeing the back cover of the catalog for sale. |

| After the found of car 543 in december 2010, it was time to renew the overview. I now made the registry on chronological order. So oldest know car first. 2010 was a good Rometsch Lawrence year, with the founding of the registry and off course the find of 2 cars that were in barns of many years (car 517 and 543) 2011 will even be a greater year as currently a lot of Lawrence are in the restoration fase. A lot of these cars will get back on the road in 2011/2012. Cars that are currenly in restoration are: 515,517,539,547,555,558,561,563. The bold ones will certainly be completed in 2011, so 2011 will be a great year for the Lawrence cars Regards Patrick |

| Interesting that of the 85 produced...none of the first 14 cars are known... A zero percent survival for these first 14 cars. Whereas from 515 onward it appears that there is an approximate 50 percent survival rate. Weird. I have always questioned the actual number of vw rometsch cars built due to these odd missing groups of body numbers. Seems very strange that an entire block of cars would be destroyed when the later group has such a high survival rate. |

| It was common to add some nrs in the books for tax reason...nrs of cars in the books that never were made. I spoke to a man who collect cars for the last + 60 years...he got most of them from his father. The have +950 cars in stock. He told me last friday at the opening day of the Brussels car show that some make's, even they started with nrs of cars like the first car is nr 100. Some make's used in different models the same engine nrs. He was pointing towards Pre war cars. I think at Rometsch they also did that. Maybe Christian can help us out here. Greetings. Peter |

| Hello, I talk with mr Kaulmann last year, a former worker/body maker from rometsch, he said that the lawrence numbers were starting with nr. 501. https://www.historische-vws.de/goodies/rometsch.htm greetings Rene |

| Regarding the numbers, I am also very curious if there were really 85 cars build of even less. I am still missing the numbers of 8 different cars. One of them is a 1957 build cvonvertible, so this might be one of the first 15. The italian car is probably has a number in the late 540th of early 550th. From the other cars I don't have any numbers. Lets hope I get the number some day and hopefully we can also clear the real number of cars build. For now it is 85. regards Patrick |

| Today I checked all the parts from the 533 and the 558. Most of the parts were in boxes and I had to find out for with car they originally belong to. Now I really saw the true coachbuild work of Rometsch. Parts from the different cars are not always interchangable. In below picture are the two different chrome trips for the front window that goes between the wipers. One is more than 1 cm longer than the other Here is an other example of the top chrome strip on the front window. One is 8 mm wider than the other strip and the holes are on complete different places. Fitting a strip from an other car won't work. |
congrats on the new cars.... interesting to document the variation in dimensions. What's the plan for the cars... are you going to figure out which is the best one... and then restore it and afterwards sell off the other two?
Car nr 533 definately is the best. It has very little rust and bodypanels are good. Only a small crack at the right rear light. For now, I will continue with restoring the 561 and will only use parts that come from the 561. Car 533 is also very complete, but is missing the rear bumper and unfortunately also the convertible top. The 558 has both bumpers and a convertible top frame, but was severe damaged in the past and needs a lot of work. I have not decided if I keep the 533 and sell the 558 or that I sell them as a package deal. In the end I will only restore one and will sell two and for the moment I will go for the 561 to be the one I am keeping. (But it can also that I keep the 533 and sell the 558 and 561) regards Patrick |
This is a very interesting picture. This cars has the curved body with fiat style taillight. Currently there are only two cars known that are like this (the 558 and the 566). I just spoke with Dennis on the phone and he can't remember any numbers, but he told me that the car was originally metallic blue and he painted it silver with black. I checked the remainders of the 558 and that car was originally all yellow. So Dennis his old car might be the 566 or it is a car not yet discovered. Now I have to find out if the 566 was bought in santa barbara..... |

| I found out that the Fiat 1000 was produced from ?? '65 up to 2000 in India under the name "Premier Padmini". If those Fiat taillights are exactly the same as the Rometsch taillights, that makes India a wealthy source for Rometsch taillights... |
