Wow - an amazing discovery!

My steering box is leaking from the top seal... Needed a good laugh!

Right then... where am I going to get a new upper seal where the actual steering column shaft comes out the top?

Status say they're obsolete.
KK don't sell them but can re-con the entire box for £250 + VAT

Anyone done this and found a source for seals?

Strangely, the lower seal is fine.

Challenge accepted.... I'll find one and when I do, I'll buy every single one they have!

I simply don't believe that somewhere, in some other industrial application, somewhere in the history of engineering, the same size seal has not been used elsewhere...

Anyone know the actual size..? I've got the dimensions for the bottom seal, just not the top one.

I'll strip it all down tonight and report my findings.

Any chance it's just the shaft gone rusty with it standing and a good polish will resurect it's sealing contact with the seal lip?

Having never had one apart, I dont know, but is it just a big rubber O-ring you need?

Halfords do packs of different sized ones. Or is it more like the rear axel seals?

No - look on the Status website - it's a proper, specific square section seal, similar in proportion to a skateboard wheel bearing etc.

Cant get an idea of size, guessing the internal diameter is about the size of a one penny coin?

Vewib do a later seal, maybe see if that could be modified/hacked to work?

I'll find some secret stash of seals then go into business rebuilding early steering boxes...

That's today's plan.

Hey Andy,

Post me the dimensions and I'll have a look. I'm thinking down under Australia with their pre assembled KD (Knock Down) factories. Possible that info stays local down there.
The other is eastern block as they still do truly amazing things there like this AC Cobra factory in an old MIG factory

This is an anniversary special that became a rare, one-of-one sample. Kirkham Motorsports wanted to celebrate their years in the restoration and authentic car replica business that they decided to make a dozen of these copper-bodied Shelby Cobras. The plan never came to fruition though and only one unit was made. And it’s now available for sale. The car has a rolling chassis so you can choose your engine and transmission according to your budget or taste. Or you can buy the car as is and use it as a beautiful decor, which is less than ideal since this is a car built for running fast. $110,000.

I am sure that we can find some seals :)

Hi Mr Triumph
you could try Roger Bray in Exeter as up to 1957 the 356 Porsche used mildly tweaked VW steering boxes, failing that there is NLA in the 'States I don't have an address but try Googling it, they have a large range of 356 parts, meanwhile have you made sure the box isn't just over filled as it seems a bit odd its coming out the top, and you obmitted to mention pinching up the horse shoe clip on the handbrake lever, best of luck Bill.

Yep - I did remember to pinch up the horseshoes!

Just stripped down the steering box - it's like new in there! It wasn't over filled.
The upper seal is actually below the fill level believe it or not so can easily leak.

Amazingly, it't a weird kind of seal that looks like a bearing on the outside, but has a fury fibre type affair to seal against the steering shaft and that;s where it was leaking from.

I've got a ton of photo's of it all, but they'll have to wait until tomorrow as I need to get to bed.

Thanks all - I'll find a way, I always do!

They're not original ones Rich - as the original one is just a pressed tin cup with a felt/fibre collar inserted in and generally a fairly poor effort, but I guess at that small size, proper lip seals were not avaialbe that small.

These are a nitrile NBR lip seal and shoul be perfect for the job.

Took some serious phoning round and net research to get the size, but I found an old stash and bought the lot.

Once I've fitted it and made sure it's ok I'l work out what to do with the rest... but there's one with your name on already my friend.
